LastGeneration: Why Study End-Times Prophecy? -Fulfilled Prophecy

Why Study End-Times Prophecy?

Many Christians today don’t feel the need to study what the Bible teaches about the end times since they know that, in the end, God wins. Yet, contrary to this popular view, there are many reasons to know the details. Here are 10.

·        They’re part of God’s Word. It’s been estimated that up to a third of the Bible is prophecy. Over 300 detailed prophecies were fulfilled at Christ’s first coming. Many more await fulfillment at His second coming. If we’re truly students of God’s Word, then we’ll be students of the prophecies. As the apostle Paul told his young disciple Timothy: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

·

·        They prove that the Bible is God’s Word. Only God could know minute details of what would happen to individuals, cities and nations thousands of years in advance. When people see the end-times prophecies being fulfilled, they’ll have solid reason to put their faith in the God of the Bible. Jesus spoke of the apologetic value of prophecy when He said, “Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe” (John 14:29).

·

·        Jesus gave us signs of His second coming and commanded us to watch for their fulfillments. (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21)

·

·        God promises a special blessing for those who study the end times: “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3, see also 22:7).

·

·        They prepare us for what’s coming. Contrary to the pretribulational rapture teaching, the prophecies reveal that Christians will have to go through a time of terrible persecution by the Antichrist (Matthew 24:21-22, Mark 13:19-20, Revelation 6:9-11, 7:14, 13:7-10 and 15, 14:12-13). Knowledge of this will help us prepare mentally and spiritually.

·

·        They help protect us against spiritual deception. The Bible warns that false prophets will precede the coming of the Antichrist, and many professing Christians will follow them. End-times prophecies show us what to watch out for. (Matthew 24:24-26, Mark 13:21-22, 2 Thessalonians 2:3,Revelation 13:11-18)

·

·        They increase our worship of God. Christians who see prophecies fulfilled before their eyes will marvel at His sovereignty over the nations and the power of His unseen hand.

·

·        They give us strategy for ministry. Like the men of Issachar who understood the times and drew up their battle plans accordingly, Christians who have insight into the end times will have knowledge for spiritual battle (1 Chronicles 12:32).

·

·        They give comfort, encouragement and hope. When the time of tribulation comes, those who see the prophecies will know they only to have to endure for a limited time.

·

·        They stir us to evangelism, good works and holy living. Reflecting on the end times frees us from a careless, temporal perspective (Titus 2:11-13). Those who are alive during their fulfillment will have an increased urgency to share the gospel while there is still time.

Biblical Astronomy: The Hebrew Mazzaroth

Last Updated: 11/14/2009 22:59                                                                                                                                             |

This page is my little introduction to some resources on Biblical astronomy. This is not to be confused with astrology, which is the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the heavenly bodies on human affairs. Biblical astronomy recognizes that God created the heavens and they are for signs to us. They are also the origin of our marking of time.

Most people today have grown up with the names of the 12 signs of the Zodiac as their only education on the naming of stars and constellations. In reality, the names remain the same today as ancient cultures called them before the flood. In fact each name carries a meaning that, when put together in the constellation, tells a story. Curious what that story is? Read on...

Genesis 1:14-19
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signsH226, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

There's some truly amazing "coincidences" that happen in the stars. In reality, I don't believe in coincidences like these. I would recommend a background understanding of the Hebrew Mazzaroth. Chuck Missler has a great mp3 download for $7.95 called Signs in the Heavenswhere he goes over some of these ancient constellations that spell out the plan of salvation in the stars starting with what we call Virgo (representing the virgin birth of the Messiah) and end with Leo (the Lion of the tribe of Judah).

The sign of the Son of man in heaven by Lyuben Piperov: Sofia, Bulgaria (June 2001)

The Lord Jesus said that in the time of the end there will be a sign in the sky, “the sign of the Son of man in heaven” (Matthew 24:30), the Greek word translated ‘heaven’ here being used both for the abode of God and the celestial firmament. There are two ways of interpreting such prophecies, the figurative/metaphorical way and the literal/physical way. In the last few centuries more attention has been paid to the former method than to the latter, but I would like to share with readers a recent discovery I have made of a literal fulfillment of the prophecy.

The link between the Lord Jesus and the fish is well known. In the Gospels we read that some of the disciples of Jesus were fishermen, that Jesus fed thousands of hungry people with bread and fish miraculously multiplied, and that he caused large numbers of fish to be caught by miraculous means. Later the fish became a symbol of Christianity, because in Greek the initial letters of the statement ‘Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior’ make the Greek word for fish. There is a remarkable astronomical link with this fact, which we will now explore.

The constellations are arbitrarily divided areas of the sky in which are stars that may be quite different from each other in brightness, spectral class and distance from the earth. There are eighty-eight of them today. Some were named by Europeans less than 500 years ago during expeditions into the southern hemisphere. The twelve constellations of the Zodiac, through which the sun makes its annual course (as it appears to us), have long been identified as such, the identification of some constellations being traceable back to the Babylonians or even to more ancient Near East civilizations. The constellation known as Pisces has been known as such since the first century A.D., and, together with Venus as the Bright Morning Star, played a major role in East Mediterranean astrology.1

During the era of the great geographical discoveries, when the oceans were widely explored, there arose a need for a unified method of naming stars, the only navigational aids in the open seas. The German astronomer Johannes Bayer (1572-1625) introduced, in his 1603 stellar atlasUranometria Nova, the practice of designating the brightest stars in the constellations by the letters of the Greek alphabet. Today it is not the only method of denoting stars, but, apart from the individual names given to the brightest stars, it is the most convenient one.

Usually the brightest star in a constellation is designated alpha (α), the first letter in the Greek alphabet, but this is not so in the case of the constellation Pisces. Here the star designatedomega (ω), the last letter of the Greek alphabet, is slightly brighter than alpha and much brighter than the star beta (β), the second letter. It is in fact the third brightest star, after eta (η) and gamma (γ), among the approximately seventy-five stars in Pisces visible to the naked eye. The reason for this change from the normal way of designating stars in a constellation remains a puzzle.

At this point, let me remind you of what the Lord Jesus says of himself in the book of Revelation: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last” (22:13; cf. 1:8,17; 2:8;21:6). In the same chapter he refers to himself as “the bright and morning star” (v.16).

At present the sun is in Pisces at the time of the vernal (spring) equinox.2 However, due to a slight wobbling of the earth on its axis, the position of the sun within the twelve constellations of the Zodiac gradually moves backwards over the years, the whole process being calculated as taking 26,000 years before it is back in the same position again.3 As there are twelve Zodiac constellations, this means that the sun remains in a particular constellation of the Zodiac at the time of the spring equinox for just over 2,000 years. The sun moved into the constellation of Pisces, the Fishes—representative, as shown above, of the Lord Jesus Christ—shortly before his birth, and is calculated to leave Pisces and enter Aquarius, the Water Carrier, in the next 100 years. The present age is therefore sometimes referred to as the Age of Pisces.

We now need to consider the concept of the meridian. This is an imaginary line running from the horizon due north of an observer through the heavens to the horizon due south of an observer. The meridian at the vernal equinox is called the zero meridian, and it runs through the constellation of Pisces in which the sun is situated. At the time of the birth of Jesus Christ the nearest visible star in Pisces to the zero meridian would have been that designated alpha (α). However, due to the slow movement of the sun through the Zodiac, mentioned above (the precession of the equinoxes), the nearest star in Pisces to the zero meridian, in fact the nearest of all the 1,800 brightest stars as listed in a star catalogue, is now that designated omega (ω). It is calculated that it will be exactly on the zero meridian early in 2012. [My comment: See HIStory, Our Future Studies and Global Warming and the Day of the Lord for confirming date studies from the Bible and current events.]

It is surely significant that, in the constellation with a name that is particularly identified with the Lord Jesus, a star designated alpha by astronomers was closest to the zero meridian at the time of His birth, and a star designated omega is closest to the zero meridian at the time when we expect him to return. This is especially so when, as explained above, astronomers have departed from their normal convention and designated one of the brightest stars in the constellationomega.

But there is more. I mentioned above the fact that the planet Venus was referred to as the Bright Morning Star by the ancients,4 a title used of the Lord Jesus in Revelation 22, in close proximity to the reference to him as “Alpha and Omega”. On 30 March Venus became the ‘Morning Star’ and will remain so till the end of 2001. Moreover, for the period 24 January to 10 June (137 days) it was situated in the constellation of Pisces, a rare astronomical event. Such a long sojourn in one constellation was only possible because, instead of moving straight on through the heavens, the path of Venus in our skies performed a loop within the constellation of Pisces. Also, on 11 and 12 April Venus passed very close to the star omega (ω) in Pisces, probably the closest for millennia.

Whatever might be the figurative application of Matthew 24:30, these remarkable astronomical phenomena surely provide a literal fulfillment of “the sign of the Son of man in heaven”, and warn us that the day of his return is near.

1. See the article, “Starry fish in the firmament”, E. C. Krupp, Sky and Telescope, USA, Dec. 1998. 16).

2. The term ‘equinox’ refers to the two occasions each year, spring and autumn, when day and night are of

3. This phenomenon is called ‘the precession of the equinoxes’.

4. Venus orbits between the earth and the sun. It is therefore visible (when it can be seen at all) either for a few hours before sunrise or for a few hours after sunset, never throughout the night. This led the ancients to refer to it as both the Morning Star and the Evening Star, thinking they were different ‘stars’.

LastGeneration: Revelation Chapter Four -Chuck Smith

    4. The Rapture

    REVELATION 4:1

Here we enter into the third division of the book of Revelation. Chapter 4 begins

with the Greek phrase meta tauta or "after these things."

After these things [the things of the church] I looked, and, behold, a door was

opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet

talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which

must be hereafter [also meta tauta - 'after these things'] (Revelation 4:1).

We have now come to the end of the church history upon the earth and the final

    message to the churches.

In His messages to the last four churches, Jesus spoke of His second coming. He

warned the churches of His return. "Behold, I come quickly," He said. If they

didn't repent they would be cast into the Great Tribulation. If they kept the word

of His patience, Jesus promised that He would keep them from the hour of

    temptation.

"After these things" - after the church has finished her testimony upon the earth

and God is through with us - there shall come from heaven,

The voice of the archangel, and the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall

rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with

them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the

    Lord (I Thessalonians 4:16-17).

The church will be transported into heaven for a seven-year period during which

time there will be Great Tribulation upon the earth. (For an expanded

commentary on the rapture of the church, see Snatched Away! by the author.)

After the church's witness and work upon the earth is completed, the trump of

God shall sound. The trumpet sound will be saying to the Christians, the body of

    Christ, "Come up hither!"

While in summer camp, I've heard the trumpet say "Rise and shine!" and I've

heard the trumpet say "Go to bed." I've heard the trumpet say "Come and eat!",

and at football games I've heard it say "Charge!" But I'm waiting for the trumpet

to say "Come up hither!" I don't know what kind of a trumpet call it will be - but

I'll understand it and recognize it the minute I hear it!

When the trump of God shall sound, the dead will be raised incorruptible. And

"we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" (I Corinthians

15:51-52), "caught up... to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be

with the Lord" (I Thessalonians 4:17). The Bible does not say that we shall be in

heaven forever. It says that we shall be "with the Lord."

Wherever Jesus is, that's where everyone who is a Christian will be, because

we're all part of the body of Christ. We'll never be separated from Him. While He

is in heaven, we'll be in heaven. When He comes back to earth, we'll come back

to the earth. When He goes into the new heaven and the new earth, we'll go into

the new heaven and the new earth.

The Jehovah's Witnesses say, "I don't want to go to heaven and twiddle my

thumbs for eternity." Born-again Christians don't intend to. We intend to be

there for seven years while the earth goes through the Tribulation. We'll enjoy

the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in heaven. Then we expect to come back to

reign with Christ upon the earth. We'll reign with Him as kingdom priests on the

earth for one thousand years, then enter into the new heaven and new earth

wherein dwells righteousness, and we'll live and reign with Him forever.

If the Lord told me to sit on a cloud and twiddle my thumbs, I'd be the happiest

thumb-twiddler in all the universe! I'm not afraid of what God has in store for

me. I can hardly wait! I'm sure it'll be more exciting than twiddling my thumbs. I

feel sorry for those people who degrade heaven. They say, "You're always talking

about the 'sweet by and by' or the 'pie in the sky.' You should be more

concerned with the 'here and now'."

It was Jesus who encouraged us and gave us this glorious hope. I'm looking

forward to going to heaven. I don't care what they say, I'm anxious to see it.

Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for

you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye

may be also" (John 14:2-3). There's the clue. Where Jesus is, that's where I'll

be, and in His presence is fullness of joy.

It took seven days for the Lord to create this beautiful world. He's been

preparing heaven for two thousand years. Imagine what it must be like by now!

And you don't want to go there? Friend, you can stay here in all this pollution if

you want to, but I'm going up!

I believe that the rapture of the church takes place in verse one of Revelation 4 -

after the things of the church history are completed. John heard a voice as a

trumpet saying, "Come up hither, and I will show you things that shall be after

these things." Now John will see the things that shall take place after the church

    is gone.

    REVELATION 4:2-7

    The Heavenly Scene

"And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven,

and one sat on the throne" (Revelation 4:2).

Why was John "in the spirit"? Because flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom

of heaven. "And one sat on the throne." This is the great, beautiful throne of

God. As John looked at God, he didn't see any form.

"And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone" (Revelation

4:3). Jasper is a diamond-like, clear, crystal stone with a purple hue. The sardine

stone is blood red. The sardine stone was the first stone and the jasper stone

was the last stone that the high priest in the Old Testament wore on his

breastplate (Exodus 28:17-20). "And there was a rainbow round about the

throne, in sight like unto an emerald" (Revelation 4:3).

John saw God sitting upon His throne in majesty on high. What an awesome

sight this must have been! He saw the brilliance of God like the brilliance of the

jasper and sardine stones - a mixture of clear, crystal, purplish hue with blood

red - and an emerald green rainbow "round about the throne" of God.

"And round about the throne were twenty-four smaller seats" The word

translated seats in the King James is the Greek word for "thrones." "And upon

the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they

had on their heads crowns of gold" (Revelation 4:4).

There are many Bible expositors who believe that the twenty-four elders are

actually representative of the church. They have white robes, as does the church

in Revelation 19:8, which is the righteousness of the saints. The twenty-four

elders also have crowns of gold upon their heads. We the church have been

promised the crowns of life, the crowns of righteousness by our Lord. Many Bible

expositors see the elders representing the church on its throne, ruling and

reigning with Christ in heaven. This is a very possible interpretation.

It is also possible that these elders represent the saints from the Old and the

New Testaments - the twelve tribes and the twelve apostles. It is also possible

that they're created beings of God like angels and cherubs. These elders may be

created beings for the specific ministry of sitting on the twenty-four thrones

around God's throne. We cannot know for sure.

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and

there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven

    Spirits of God (Revelation 4:5).

Again, I refer you to Isaiah 11:2 for the seven-fold working of the Holy Spirit in

Jesus Christ (see Revelation 1:4 commentary).

And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst

of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts [proper translation

    is "living creatures"] (Revelation 4:6).

These are not beasts like wild or dumb animals; they are actually highly

intelligent created beings of God. As they are described in and compared with

Ezekiel 1 and 10, we know that these are cherubim about the throne of God.

These four living creatures were "full of eyes before and behind. The first living

creature was like a lion, and the second was like a calf, and the third had a face

as a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle" (Revelation 4:6-7).

Some see these creatures as manifestations of Christ in the Gospels. In the first

Gospel, Matthew presents Jesus as the lion of the tribe of Judah. Mark presents

Him as a calf, a beast of burden representing a suffering servant. Luke presents

Him as the Son of man. John presents Him as the Son of God, the eagle

    representing the Divinity.

    REVELATION 4:8-11

And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they

were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy,

holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those

living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne,

who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him that sat

on the throne, and they worship him that lives for ever and ever, and cast their

crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and

honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are

    and were created (Revelation 4:8-11).

Here we get a view of the heavenly scene. Study Revelation 4. Fix it in your

mind. You don't want to look like a country bumpkin on his first trip to the big

city when you get to heaven. You don't want to be looking around and asking

    everyone, "What's that!?"

You'll see God sitting upon the throne with the emerald rainbow about the

throne. You'll see the twenty-four lesser thrones for the elders and you'll see the

cherubim who stand before God continually saying, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God

Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come" - declaring the holiness and eternal

character of God. As they do this, the twenty-four elders fall down upon the

crystal sea which is before the throne of God, cast their crowns before the

throne, and declare God's worthiness to receive their worship. God is worthy by

virtue of the fact that He has created all things and that all things were made for

    Him and for His pleasure.

Now, like it or not, God created you for His own pleasure. You say, "I don't think

it's fair!" Well, that's tough. That's the way it is. Like it or not, that's why you've

    been created.

If you truly submit to that scriptural truth, you'll find fulfillment. If you don't

submit to it, you'll go around forever empty, always frustrated, and ever

reaching out for something more, but never finding satisfaction. Since God

created you for His pleasure, the only way your life will be meaningful and

fulfilling is by bringing pleasure to God.

"Without faith it is impossible to please God: for he that comes to God must

believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him"

(Hebrews 11:6). When you diligently seek after God, you bring Him pleasure.

The way to have fulfillment is to live a life of faith seeking after full fellowship

with God. You'll find the most satisfying and complete life you can have when

you're fulfilling the basic reason for God creating you.

"Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast

created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." All things

were created for God's good pleasure. A lot of people come down on God for

this. That's their problem. You can fight against it if you want but you won't get

anywhere. The best thing is to submit to it. You can fight against a block wall to

get through it. You can beat yourself against it all you want, but I happen to

know what's in a block wall. I've watched them put in the steel bars and pour the

grout. I know that, try as you may, you'll only hurt yourself. You're not going to

affect that wall one bit. You might stain it a bit with your blood, but that won't

    hurt it.

Likewise, you may fight against God all you want, but you're the one who's going

to suffer. Your fighting doesn't take anything away from God. It's time you wake

up and quit fighting against God.

LastGeneration: Can Third Temple be built without destroying Dome of the Rock?

Can Third Temple be built without destroying Dome of the Rock?

A new Jewish interfaith initiative launched last week argues building the Third JewishTemple in Jerusalem would not necessitate the destruction of the Dome of the Rock.

"God's Holy Mountain Vision" project hopes to defuse religious strife by showing that Jews' end-of-days visioncould harmoniously accommodate Islam's present architectural hegemony on the Temple Mount.

"This vision of religious shrines in peaceful proximity can transform the Temple Mount from a place of contention to its original sacred role as a place of worship shared by Jews, Muslims and Christians," said Yoav Frankel, director of the initiative.

The Interfaith Encounter Association at the Mishkenot Sha'ananim's Konrad AdenauerConference Center in Jerusalem is sponsoring the program, which includes interfaith study and other educational projects.

According to Islamic tradition, the Dome of the Rock, built in 691, marks the spot where Muhammed ascended to Heaven.

But according to Jewish tradition, Mount Moriah, now under the Dome of the Rock, is where the Temple's Holy of Holies was situated.

Until now Jewish tradition has assumed that destruction of the Dome of the Rockwas a precondition for the building of the third and last Temple.

However, in an article that appeared in 2007 in Tehumin, an influential journal of Jewish law, Frankel, a young scholar, presented a different option.

His main argument is that Jewish doctrine regarding the rebuilding of the Temple emphasizes the role of a prophet.

This prophet would have extraordinary authority, including the discretion to specify the Temple's precise location, regardless of any diverging Jewish traditions.

Frankel considers the scenario of a holy revelation given to an authentic prophet that the Temple be rebuilt on the current or an extended Temple Mount in peaceful proximity to the dome and other houses of prayer such as the Aksa Mosque and nearby Christian shrines.

However, both Muslims and Jews have expressed opposition to the initiative.

Sheikh Abdulla Nimar Darwish, founder of the Islamic Movement in Israel, said it was pointless to talk about what would happen when the mahdi, the Muslim equivalent of the messiah, would reveal himself.

"Why are we taking upon ourselves the responsibility to decide such things?" Darwish said in a telephone interview with The Jerusalem Post. "Even Jews believe that it is prohibited to rebuild the Temple until the messiah comes. So what is there to talk about.

"The mahdi will decide whether or not to rebuild the Temple. If he decides that it should be rebuilt, I will go out to the Temple Mount and help carry the rocks."

Darwish warned against any attempt to rebuild the Temple before the coming of the mahdi.

"As long as there is a Muslim alive, no Jewish Temple will be built on Al-Haram Al-Sharif [the Temple Mount]. The status quo must be maintained, otherwise there will be bloodshed."

In contrast, Baruch Ben-Yosef, chairman of the Movement to Restore the Temple, made it clear that the Temple had to be built where the Dome of the Rock presently stands.

"Anybody who says anything else simply does not know what he is talking about," he said. "A prophet does not have the power to change the law which explicitly states the location of the Temple."

Ben-Yosef also rejected the idea that rebuilding of the Temple had to be done by a prophet.

"All you need is a Sanhedrin," he said.

Mainstream Orthodox rabbis have opposed attempts to rebuild the Temple since the Mount came under Israeli control in 1967.

The Chief Rabbinate of Israel even issued a decree prohibiting Jews from entering the area due to ritual purity issues.

However, several grassroots organizations such as the Movement to Restore the Temple, and maverick rabbis, including Rabbi Israel Ariel, head of the capital's Temple Institute and a leading member of the revived Sanhedrin led by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, have called to take steps to renew the sacrifices on the Temple Mount and rebuild the Temple.
