Does Prayer Change Things?
Q. My question is regarding prayer. How does prayer change the hand of God? I always thought that He knew from beginning to end and knew all the choices we would make for our lives so how does prayer work? I recently spoke with someone who said we change the had of God through prayer and gave the example of Lot. What scriptures support this and what promises are there to hold on to so I can pray effectively for my family and friends in need? Thank you for your wisdom, God bless you
A. If God knows everything including all of our choices then He also knows what prayers we’ll pray before we pray them. None of our prayers surprise Him or catch Him off guard.
The most obvious reference to prayer changing things is in Matt. 24:20 where Jesus told the believers in Israel at the end of the Age to “pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.” That implies that by their prayers they can change the timing of the Abomination of Desolation even though the event itself is destined to happen. Jesus also said that if we remain in Him, we can ask whatever we wish and it will be given to us (John 15:7) and that God will give us whatever was ask in His name (John 16:23). James said that we don’t have because we don’t ask, and when we do ask we don’t receive because our motives are wrong (James 4:2-3)
Moses prayed and the Red sea parted (Exodus 14:15-16). Elijah prayed and fire came down from heaven (1 Kings 18:36-38). The disciples prayed and people were healed (Acts 4:12-16). The people prayed and the disciples were released from prison (Acts 12:1-17) and brought back from the dead (Acts 14:19-20). Prayer is the most basic action of our faith. Without it you couldn’t have been saved.

Only God can heal hurts often caused by unintentional consequences of actions done by those who don’t know any better, and those who do. We all can only pray the same thing Jesus did when He said. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” I pray you forgive as He did and we all learn better how to forgive. -Michael James Stone
