One Thousand Years: Genesage "courtship" (Chapter 10:6)

One Thousand Years

Genesage

“courtship"

(Chapter 10:6)

Somehow the most implausible of people had gravitated together.

Ezravivor and Delilah.

They could have been the cougar meets “puppy love” for the types and metaphors involved.

Delilah, long tresses of curled dark hair with the fresh vibrancy of a “second youth” in her old age. She seemed subdued, often reserved, quiet. This all fascinated Ezravivor who enjoyed her contradiction of age. Though she would say she was too old for him, he didn’t understand ages.

She obviously was mature, yet there was a childlike quality to her personality.

When she let her personality out that is, which was very rare. Something restrained her. Something holding her in check, often keeping her from participating with the community.

Ezravivor thought he knew what it was.  Delilah didn't think he had a clue. In the old days she would have snuffed him out with attitude treating him as clueless. She was different now, or seeming to be, maybe wanting to be, even trying to be, still something residual memories were hard to forget.

D, Delilah, had once confided in “E Z” as a friend about her dreams.

It had been an especially warm week. The nights seemed to swelter for Delilah so one day that week she opened the door a crack on her personality to Ezravvior.

Her dark complexion and olive skin even  her reticence to "get involved" gave her an air of mystique that once she opened the door a little, “E Z” was a gonner. That distance that attracted Ezravivor to her, when lessened, was like a floodgate.

Caleb had been attracted to her watching from a distance as he also noted the two orbits of Delilah and Ezravivor which seemed to spiral closer and closer.

There were times of course times when Ezravivor was sure he didn't care where she was or what she was doing.

When He saw Caleb talking to her, it was natural for him to interrupt.

He had a question for her and just because he couldn’t remember what the question was when he interrupted them, that didn’t matter. He was sure he had a question at the time.

He often found himself looking for her in a crowd or noticing if she left early and not imposing, followed  her. Whether obvious to himself or not, he was infatuated with her. He would never admit that, but to Delilah it was more than obvious.

It seemed to be obvious also to Caleb. He would find many occasions over the years to watch Ezravivor scramble.

Delilah "put up" with Ezravivor because he hadn't been put off by her rebuffs at friendship.

In the beginning she was interested because she wanted to find out if he was just plain stupid or how long it would take before he, like everyone else, would be repulsed. She worked him over good. Never giving an inch she managed to make his life miserable by never noticing his interest in her.

She ignored him as often as possible.

Oddly, or naturally, Ezravivor liked that. She figured out He HAD to be stupid. No one would put up with her much less herself.

She never really solved the stupid problem about him.

At times she was angry with him for no apparent reason except that he was available.

Available and dumb enough to let her get away with it. She knew that was wrong but she just couldn't come to grips with the idea that anyone would want to be her friend.

Besides, if she really admitted it, there were times when she enjoyed it.

She liked treating him bad. Nothing too horrific, but most of the time he never even noticed which made her think "blond" was not confined to women. Other times she was sure he must have got it, but he didn’t react and always came back for more.  Ezravivor could have been a blond in her opinion.

Eventually a grudging respect for Ezravivor developed.

Virtue* terms of endearment. -cathe laurie

I have a nickname. Want to know it? It’s Monkey.

Greg gave it to me years ago; so long in fact that we can’t recall its origin, but it has stuck with me for more than 30 years. I hope it isn’t because I look like one or act like one!

But having a nickname is a term of endearment. Not just anyone can call me by my nickname, though some have tried. No one has that privilege but Greg alone.

The other day, I heard Greg playing with our granddaughter Stella. They were giving nicknames to baby sister Lucy and Mommy, when I heard Greg say, “Stella, do you know what my name is?” “No,” she answered. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard him say, “Call me Butterfly!” Believe me, there is nothing butterfly-like about Greg, but that is the name he chose for himself.

Terms of endearment are sometimes understood only by the two who share in that special relationship.

I have a unique, one-of-a-kind relationship with Greg, and he with me . . . and Stella.

So when I read that the apostle John refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved, I understand how he felt about himself. There was an intimacy he had with our Lord, and we see it at the Last Supper when he leaned on Jesus’ breast.

Now think about that for a moment. How many people in your life have a right to do that? Not many. My husband, for sure. My two boys did, but even that mother-child relationship changed with time.

So really, most of us can count on one hand those we allow that privilege of leaning on our breast. And yet, we read John leaned on Jesus’ breast. So close that he was able to hear His heart beating. Ba boom, ba boom, ba boom. Imagine that!

As a child, I would think about how wonderful it would be to be like the saints whose pictures I’d see in my small white prayer book—all dressed in white, beatific looks on their faces, and a circle of yellow light behind their heads. I knew they were special. Like the winner in the Miss America pageant, only some received first, second, or third-place crowns. All the rest of us were just plain, ordinary girls.

But then, one day, at the ripe old age of 13, I heard for the first time that God so loved me that He gave his only begotten Son to die for me so I could have that intimate relationship with Him.

I can’t imagine the depth of love God has for the entire world that He would sacrifice His Son. I know how painful separation can be for a parent and child. There isn’t anyone I would sacrifice a child for. No one.

And yet, that is what God did for me . . . and you.

John reveled in that nearness. He had access to Jesus’ heart, and so do we.

So go ahead, take a nickname for yourself. I have. I am the girl Jesus loves.

LastCall: Easter means we're acceptable to God -Daily Hope

Easter means we're acceptable to God
by Rick Warren

God gave Jesus to die for our sins, and he raised him to life, so that we would be made acceptable to God (Romans 4:25 CEV).

" It is Christ's goodness in you that makes you acceptable. You're not perfect, but he is. "

Jesus' death and resurrection make us acceptable to God.

Would you be surprised to know that most people do not accept themselves? I've been a pastor now for over 30 years and I've talked to tens of thousands of people, and I've found that most people really don't like themselves inside. They wish they were different. They wish they looked different. They wish they acted different.

We don't accept ourselves and so we spend our lives trying to find acceptance among other people; but even more important than being accepted by other people is being accepted by God. That's a problem. Why? Because God is perfect and you're not. And neither am I.

God lives in a perfect place called heaven, so God has a problem. How does he get imperfect people into a perfect place where he is perfect? (Because, obviously, if he allowed imperfect people in a perfect place it wouldn't be perfect anymore.) God has to come up with a plan for imperfect people to be able to live in a perfect place.

God's plan is what I call "The Great Exchange."

The Bible says, "God took the sinless Christ and poured into him our sins. Then, in exchange, he poured God's goodness into us!" (2 Corinthians 5:21 LB).

I don't know how to make it any clearer than to say it like this: You're never going to be good enough to get into heaven because it's perfect and you stopped being perfect a long time ago. It is Christ's goodness in you that makes you acceptable.  You're not perfect, but he is. So God says, "We'll do an exchange here. Jesus will take your sins and you get my goodness in your life." That's quite a deal!

A lot of people feel trapped by their past. They say, "If you knew what I've done, you'd know I'd never be acceptable to God." I don't know what you've done, but God does and he still accepts you: "God says he will accept us and acquit us—declare us 'not guilty'—if we trust Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, by coming to Christ, no matter who we are or what we have been like" (Romans 3:22 LB).

LastCall: Chain of Command -Raul Ries

Chain of Command

” ‘You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you,
bring to me, and I will hear it.’ ”

Deuteronomy 1:17

God is not a respecter of persons. Here, Moses was setting up precedence for the people to be impartial and to be orderly. He is setting up the chain of command. There is a chain of command in the military; there is a chain of command in the business world, and there is a chain of command in the church.

How many of us make decisions without going through the chain of command? In business, in law enforcement and in ministry, it happens. People take authority. They think because of their position, they can make decisions.

Do not make that mistake. You cannot make decisions without checking with your leaders and those over you. It can cost you. You have to remember this no matter what position you are in, whether it is a business or ministry.

Here in the ministry, I will have to give an account to God one day for everything we do and how we spend His money. Wherever we are, whether it is ministry or in a job, we cannot cheat our employers or employees. Do what is godly and God will honor it, and then God will promote you to the top.

Honor all people. Love the brotherhood.
Fear God. Honor the king.
-1 Peter 2:17-
