Strong 6.8-magnitude quake shakes central Peru
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook buildings in Peru's capital city, Lima, on Wednesday, witnesses and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The USGS said the epicenter of the quake was 51 miles north of Pucallpa, in the Peruvian Amazon forest close to the Brazilian border. The USGS said the quake, initially upgraded to a magnitude 6.9, was 90.2 miles deep.  

Once-a-century earthquake rattles East Coast
A strong earthquake rattled the East Coast on Tuesday, sending tremors as far as Canada, damaging well-known buildings in the nation's capital and sending scared office workers into the streets. There were no reports of major damage or serious injuries from the 5.8 magnitude quake, which was centered in Mineral, Virginia. It was the largest quake in Virginia since 1897 and struck at a shallow depth, increasing its potency.  

New national debt data: It's growing about $3 million a minute, even during his vacation

That means the debt that our federal government owes a whole lot of somebodies including China has increased $4,247,000,000,000 in just 945 days. That's the fastest increase under any president ever.  

Moody's cuts Japan's debt rating on deficit concerns
Rating agency Moody's has cut Japan's long-term sovereign debt rating, citing concerns about the size of the country's deficit and borrowing levels. The rating was cut to Aa3 from Aa2, though Moody's also said the country's outlook was stable. Japan, the world's third-largest economy, has the highest public-debt level amongst developed economies.  

Rebels pushing to secure Tripoli
Tripoli has seen running battles with Gaddafi loyalists, and new Nato air strikes, a day after the Libyan rebels seized the fugitive leader's compound. Rebels fought loyalists in several southern and central areas of the capital, including a new front line to the east of the international airport. Two bomb blasts shook the city as a Nato jet passed overhead.

Illinois Loses Most Jobs in the Nation
Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

FEMA: Entire East Coast should prepare for Hurricane Irene
The entire eastern coast of the United States should prepare for Irene, a large and dangerous hurricane churning northwestward over the tropical waters of the Caribbean, the nation's emergency chief warned Tuesday.  

Strong East Coast quake highly unusual: scientist
The strong earthquake that rattled the eastern United States on Tuesday was highly unusual in its severity, though it was centered in a part of Virginia known for smaller quakes, seismologists said.  

Park service: Earthquake cracks Washington Monument near its top, closed indefinitely
The National Park Service says engineers have found a crack near the top of the Washington Monument presumably caused by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast.
