Besetting Sins?

Q. We have read in the news about Pastors who have been caught in affairs, homosexuality, pornography and so on. What happens to people who are caught up in a particular sin, that maybe down inside they don’t want to do, but it seems they can’t stop. Even though they still believe with all their heart that Jesus paid the price for their sins. Are they still saved?

A. Of course they are. In fact, I believe that almost every Christian has at least one sin in their life they can’t get rid of. Most of us just don’t have to endure public disgrace.  But Colossians 2:13-14 says the Lord forgave all of our sins.  In the Greek language this means each and every one, not just those we committed before we were saved.

And Hebrews 10:12-14 says that Jesus died once for all time, as a sacrifice for sins, and by His one sacrifice He has made us perfect forever.  That means that every sin ever committed by every person who will ever live was covered at the cross. When we agree to let His death pay the price for our sins, it covers every sin of our lives, even the ones we haven’t committed yet.
