Iran says to start work on new enrichment plant
– Iran will start work on a new uranium enrichment nuclear plant, a senior official said on Monday, part of a big expansion of its nuclear programme which has contributed to fears in the West it aims to build a bomb. Defying Western pressure to curb its sensitive nuclear work, Iran announced in November it planned to expand its enrichment activities by building 10 new sites. UK to send warships to get stranded Britons

Saudi Arabia announces nuclear centre
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil supplier, is set to establish a civilian nuclear and renewable energy centre to help meet increasing demand for power as the country pushes forward with economic expansion plans. The official Saudi press agency said on Saturday that the new centre, the King Abdullah City for Nuclear and Renewable Energy, would be based in Riyadh and would be led by Hashim Abdullah Yamani, a former commerce and trade minister.

At least 11 people were killed and more than 70 injured when an earthquake shook parts of northern Afghanistan, officials say The Samangan province deputy governor said the quake hit just before midnight local time on Sunday. 'Palestinians will rule themselves' says Ehud Barak
Israel's Defence Minister Ehud Barak has said Israel must, eventually, allow the Palestinians to rule themselves. In an interview with Army Radio he said in the future there would be a separate Palestinian state "whether you like it or not". The interview comes as Israelis mark Memorial Day, commemorating Israeli soldiers killed in action.
Pope 'cries with Church abuse victims' in Malta
Pope Benedict XVI has held an emotional meeting with alleged victims of sexual abuse by priests in Malta, pledging to "bring to justice" abusers. The Pope had tears in his eyes and he also "expressed his shame and sorrow over what victims and their families have suffered", the Vatican said. The meeting, in private, took place at the end of the Pope's visit to Malta.
UK water use 'worsening global crisis'
The amount of water used to produce food and goods imported to developed countries is worsening water shortages in the developing world, a report says. The report, focusing on the UK, says two-thirds of the water used to make UK imports is used outside its borders. The Engineering the Future alliance of professional engineering bodies says this is unsustainable, given population growth and climate change.
Airline body IATA condemns 'European embarrassment'
The body that represents the world's airlines, IATA, has criticised Europe's governments for the way they closed air space because of volcanic ash. The head of the airline industry body, Giovanni Bisignani, told the BBC:"This is a European embarrassment and it's a European mess". Millions of passengers have been affected by the crisis, which is now into its fifth day.
Netanyahu: We want peace, but not at the price of security
Israel wants peace with its neighbors, but not at the price of security, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday at a ceremony on Ammunition Hill on the eve of Remembrance Day. “Not one day has passed without us reaching out to our neighbors in peace. Not even one day, and we still reach out to those of our neighbors that desire peace,” said Netanyahu, who made his statements in the midst of a stalled peace process with the Palestinians.
