PREPARING FOR A STRONG MARRIAGE
Ephesians 5
J. Paul Getty, one of the richest men who ever lived, once said, “I would give my entire fortune for
one happy marriage.” While it is sad that Getty apparently never experienced a happy marriage, his
statement reveals a lot about how wonderful a good marriage is. Let’s take a look at some important
principles for having a strong marriage.
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. Turn on the light (verse 13). If you can’t find something, you turn on the light, because light
helps you see things accurately. Likewise, Scripture reveals truth and shows us where to go
(see Psalm 119:105). Look at your marriage in the light of Scripture, and you will see you
need to do in your relationship with your spouse.
2. Wake up (verse 14). You can’t sleepwalk through your marriage and assume it will turn out ok.
Marriage is tough enough, but today’s culture, with its glorification of immorality, is no friend of
marriage and family the way God intended it. It is vital for us as believers to protect ourselves.
3. Walk circumspectly (verse 15). When you sign a contract, you want to be circumspect, being
careful and exact, examining every detail to make sure you know what you’re getting into.
In the same way, we need to be careful and exact in our marriages. A strong marriage is
built on work, commitment, and attention to detail.
4. Redeem the time because the days are evil (verse 16). Here, the word redeem means to make the
most of your time. Perhaps you are thinking that you haven’t spent enough time with your
spouse or children. Quit talking about it and start doing it. No one has ever complained that
they spent too much time with their family.
5. Be filled with the Holy Spirit (verse 18). It is impossible to do all the things we need to as
Christians without the help of the Holy Spirit. Think of the Holy Spirit’s work a like a wind
filling your sails, or like salt permeating meat to protect it.
RELEVANT REMINDERS
When it comes to marriage, and really most things in our lives, we need to remember that the Bible
is true, the world is not true, and we need the help of the Holy Spirit if we expect to have a strong,
healthy marriage. In our strength, we will fail. But with God, all things are possible.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
There are three things that will truly matter when our time comes to die: faith, family, and friends.
Those are the things we want to focus on, making sure our lives are right before God. Is yours?
