UN chief signs deal with Russia-led security group
The United Nations chief has signed a cooperation agreement with a Russia-led security group of ex-Soviet nations that some see as a counterbalance to NATO. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has signed the document along with Nikolai Bordyuzha, the head of the Collective Treaty Organization. The Moscow-dominated alliance includes Russia and six other former Soviet republics. Ban said Thursday that the U.N. should work closely with regional security groups. The Kremlin was anxious to gain the U.N.'s recognition of the organization.
Russia says it needs 50 N-subs to counter US, British fleets
The Russian Navy needs at least 50 nuclear-powered submarines to counterbalance the fleets of the US, Britain and France, a senior Navy official said Saturday. The country has some 60 strategic, multi-functional and diesel-powered submarines in its fleet that are combat ready. 'The number of nuclear submarines in Russia's Navy should be no less than 40-50,' First Deputy of the Naval General Staff Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev said during an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio.
Drought spreading across China (video link)
Severe drought is continuing to plague southwest China, and is spreading to other parts of the country. These are the worst conditions the region has ever seen in a century. The government is calling on people to use water sparingly. The drought has affected about 6.5 million hectares of farmland around the country. More than 20 million people and 12 million head of livestock are short of drinking water. Zhang Xu, Dep. Director-General of Drough Relief HQ, said, "Southwest China is facing the most severe situation. Nearly 90 per cent of China's drought-affected farmland is in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan and Chongqing. And more than half of that is in Yunnan province."
Mexico's drug war takes growing toll on Americans
More Americans in Mexico are falling victim to a wave of drug violence sweeping the country, a change driven home by the recent killing of a U.S. Consulate employee and her husband who were gunned down after leaving a children's birthday party. The number of U.S. citizens killed in Mexico has more than doubled to 79 in 2009 from 35 in 2007, according to the U.S. State Department's annual count. No figures were available for the first two months of 2010.
Pelosi Calls on Catholic Saint to Pass Pro-Abortion Health Care Bill, Flubs Date
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on a Catholic saint today to help her and her pro-abortion colleague pass a Senate health care bill that contains massive abortion funding. Not only did Pelosi upset pro-life Catholics in so doing, but she got the date wrong concerning the saint she mentioned. "Today is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, particularly important to Italian-Americans," Pelosi said.
Obama blocks delivery of bunker-busters to Israel
The United States has diverted a shipment of bunker-busters designated for Israel. Officials said the U.S. military was ordered to divert a shipment of smart bunker-buster bombs from Israel to a military base in Diego Garcia. They said the shipment of 387 smart munitions had been slated to join pre-positioned U.S. military equipment in Israel Air Force bases.
Report: Saudi Arabia Seeks Strike on Iran
The German news magazine Der Spiegel has reported that Saudi Arabia is hoping Israel will strike Iran's nuclear facilities, and is even prepared to open its skies to Israeli warplanes to allow such an operation to take place. Similar reports were published in 2009, and denied by both Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Magnitude-5.6 quake strikes near Guantanamo, Cuba
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Guantanamo city in eastern Cuba on Saturday, sending residents fleeing into the streets but a local government official said there were no casualties. A spokesman at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay reported no damage there. "It's all calm. There's no damage and no victims either," said a local government official in Guantanamo city, who asked not to be named.
Academic Paper in China Sets Off Alarms in U.S.
It came as a surprise this month to Wang Jianwei, a graduate engineering student in Liaoning, China, that he had been described as a potential cyberwarrior before the United States Congress. ... "Chinese researchers at the Institute of Systems Engineering of Dalian University of Technology published a paper on how to attack a small U.S. power grid sub-network in a way that would cause a cascading failure of the entire U.S."
Volcano erupts near Eyjafjallajoekull in south Iceland
An Icelandic volcano, dormant for 200 years, has erupted, ripping a 1km-long fissure in a field of ice. The volcano near Eyjafjallajoekull glacier began to erupt just after midnight, sending lava a hundred metres high. Icelandic airspace has been closed, flights diverted and roads closed. The eruption was about 120km (75 miles) east of the capital, Reykjavik.
French regional polls may step up pressure on Sarkozy
French voters are going to the polls in the final round of regional elections. In the first round a week ago, President Nicolas Sarkozy's right-wing UMP party received one of its lowest scores in decades. The UMP won just over a quarter of the vote, while the opposition Socialists, combined with other Leftist parties, took 50%.
Obama makes final appeal ahead of healthcare vote
US President Barack Obama has rallied the support of Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill ahead of a crucial vote on sweeping healthcare reform. Urging them to back the measure in a House vote expected in the coming hours, he said: "Let's get this done." Democratic leaders have spent days working to get the 216 votes needed to pass the highly-contested bill.
Ban to Gazans: We stand with you
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon entered the blockaded Gaza Strip on Sunday, where 1.5 million people have been under lockdown by Israel and Egypt for nearly three years. Ban has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade, imposed after Hamas seized Gaza in 2007. In a visit to a Gaza City neighborhood badly damaged during IDF Operation Cast Lead, Ban promised residents appealing for an end to the blockade that "we stand with you."
IDF kills 2 terrorists in Samaria
Two Palestinians who attempted to stab a soldier with a pitchfork and a broken glass bottle near the Hawara checkpoint in Samaria were killed by IDF fire on Sunday afternoon. The soldier was not hurt in the attack. The incident occurred while a Nahshon Brigade force was securing Palestinians working their fields south of the settlement of Itamar.
