And Laban said to Jacob, "Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for I have learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for your sake."
Genesis 30:27
Can you think of someone in your life who is a blessing to you? I've always loved my pastor, Chuck Smith. I know that the spiritual blessings I have today in my life are only because of what he taught me, and how I learned from him. He has been a tremendous blessing to me, and to many people around the world. But over the years, I've seen too many people who were quick to receive blessings from this humble man, only to then turn around and treat him poorly. Today, you may be blessed because of someone in your life. Recognize those people, and esteem them.
You may remember Laban, whom we met a few days ago. This con man hadn't exactly been good to his nephew, Jacob. He'd fooled Jacob into serving him, promising that after seven years, Jacob could take Rachel, his daughter, as a wife. But after the seven years had passed, Laban gave Jacob his eldest daughter, Leah, as a wife instead, forcing Jacob to serve another seven years before taking Rachel as a wife. If I were Jacob, I'd be pretty upset! But Jacob was a blessing to Laban. In fact, when Jacob asked to leave, Laban begged him to stay, saying, "I have learned by experience that the LORD has blessed me for your sake."
You know, I doubt Laban ever gave much thought to the things of God, but he definitely recognized the blessings of God on Jacob. Isn't that interesting? Do you realize that people around us -- whether believers or not -- will acknowledge God if they see His blessings in our life? Even a con man like Laban acknowledged God after seeing His blessings on Jacob. And Laban realized that he was blessed, too, because of Jacob. He had increased, his family had increased, and his daughters would be taken care of forever -- not because of his intellect or business skills, but because Jacob had been there, and God's blessings were on Jacob.
Don't you want to be a person like that? Someone who people know is blessed by God, and who they know they can trust? Someone who is a blessing to those around them? If you've ever known someone like that -- someone who has been a blessing to your life -- you probably realize how valuable it is to be a blessing to others.
God uses people to bless people. Today, let me encourage you to allow the Holy Spirit to give you the love, joy, peace, patience, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to be a blessing to the people in your life (Galatians 5:22-23). And when someone is a blessing to you, recognize them, esteem them, and honor them.
