Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, praising him for his approach to the peace process.
Speaking following the leaders' meeting in Bethlehem, Putin said that the "Palestinian leadership, and the president personally, have been behaving responsibly to achieve peace based on the two-state solution."
Putin said that the Soviet Union had recognized a Palestinian state in 1988 and Russia's view on the matter had not changed.
Visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday evening that his country "has a national interest in guaranteeing peace and tranquility for Israel."
Putin's comments were made in a meeting with Shimon Peres in Jerusalem, after Israel's president asked the visiting leader to speak out on the Iran issue.

Morsi held talks with the country’s military rulers on Monday as he attempts to coax a mistrustful army into relaxing its grip on power.
The winning Muslim Brotherhood candidate has started moving into the presidential palace and has already begun talks to appoint his new cabinet, days before the military is scheduled to transfer power, a campaign spokeswoman said.
