Oil price plummets while gold hits new highs
Amid the worst period of volatility in world markets since the 2008 financial crash, gold has reached yet another intraday high while the oil price continues to plunge. In trading Tuesday in Asia, gold hit US $1,782.50 per ounce in electronic trading, before backing down to US $1,770.60 later in the day.  

Ed. Secy: States to get waivers on No Child tests
The Obama administration effectively gutted the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law Monday, giving states a way out of a decade-long policy that focused on holding schools accountable but labeled many of them failures even if they made progress. To get a waiver from the program, however, states must agree to host of education reforms the White House favors—from tougher evaluation systems for teachers and principals to programs tackling the achievement gap for minority students.  

Syria conflict descends into 'war of attrition'
Despite five months of blistering attacks on dissent, the Syrian regime has yet to score a decisive victory against a pro-democracy uprising determined to bring down the country's brutal dictatorship. President Bashar Assad still has the military muscle to level pockets of resistance, but the conflict has robbed him of almost all international support.  

Pollster: Americans Are “Pre-Revolutionary”
Amidst riots in central Europe that have now spread to London and a debt downgrade that threatens to plunge the United States into a double-dip recession, Americans’ lack of confidence in their leadership is so fervent that they are now “pre-revolutionary,” according to pollster Pat Caddell. A new Rasmussen poll shows that just 17 per cent of Americans believe that the U.S. government has the consent of the governed, an all time low.  

Trichet sees markets in worst crisis since WWII
"It is the worst crisis since World War II and it could have been the worst crisis since World War I if leaders hadn't taken the important decisions," ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said in an interview with French radio station Europe 1.  

US unlikely to regain AAA rating soon, says S&P
The US is unlikely to see its long-term credit rating return to AAA any time soon, ratings agency S&P has said. Its comments came as it downgraded the state-backed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because of their "direct reliance on the US government". It also lowered ratings for clearing houses and other institutions linked to long-term US debt from AAA to AA+.  

Russians warn NATO targeting Syria
Moscow's envoy to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has warned that the Western alliance is planning to attack Syria to help overthrow the regime of President Bashar Assad "with the long-reaching goal of preparing a beachhead for an attack on Iran,"  

Court tells Hawaii officials to explain Obama's birth records
California attorney Orly Taitz today secured an order from United States District Court Magistrate Judge Richard L. Puglisi demanding representatives of the Hawaii Department of Health appear in federal court Sept. 14 to show why Taitz should be prevented from seeing whatever original 1961 documents the agency has on record regarding Barack Obama's birth.  

Stocks Tank as Markets Enter Bear Market Territory
Stocks tanked again Tuesday as many global markets entered official bear market territory after one of the worst days on Wall Street since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Crude oil was trading as low as $76 a barrel Tuesday morning and later rose to $78, more than $20 less than the price a month ago.

Rioting and looting spread across and beyond London on Monday as hooded youths set fire to cars and buildings, smashed shop windows and hurled bottles and stones at police in a third night of violence in Britain's worst unrest in decades.  

Israel deploys drones to protect gas fields from Hezbollah
The Israel Navy has already drafted an operational plan for protecting the offshore gas fields and the decision to deploy drones was made in order to maintain a 24-hour presence over the site. Decision to deploy IAF drones was made when Hezbollah warned Israel that it would do "whatever it takes" to protect Lebanon’s maritime sovereignty.
