Yemen tribes unite to hasten Saleh's overthrow
YEMENI'S tribal leaders have announced the creation of a coalition to bolster six months of popular protests seeking civil rights and the overthrow of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. "Saleh will not rule us as long as I am alive," Sheik Sadiq al-Ahmar, the powerful head of the Hashid tribe, said after being appointed head of the new coalition against the Saudi-backed regime.  

 


US debt crisis: Obama deal will stabilise economy says Downing St
In a statement, a spokesman for the Prime Minister – who is in Italy on holiday – said the decision had helped to ensure “help stability across the global economy”. He said: “We welcome progress and it is a time of international economic uncertainty, whether in the United States or in the Eurozone or from commodity prices, so agreement will help stability across the global economy.

 

Congress moving quickly on debt and spending deal
Congress is moving quickly on an agreement to avert a potentially devastating default on U.S. obligations, with legislation that mixes a record increase in the government's borrowing cap with the promise of more than $2 trillion in spending cuts. ...The still-unreleased legislation would slice more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade and permit the nation's $14.3 trillion borrowing cap to rise by up to $2.4 trillion, enough to keep the government afloat through the 2012 elections - a key objective for Obama, whose poll numbers have sagged as the summertime crisis dragged on.  


Turkey to appoint military chiefs
The government in Turkey will on Monday start appointing new commanders of the armed forces at a four-day annual military promotions meeting. It will be the first time a civilian government decides who commands the various armed forces in Turkey. It follows last week's resignations of the chief of the Turkish armed forces and army, navy and air force heads.

  

HSBC to axe 25,000 jobs despite pre-tax profits rise
Banking giant HSBC has said it will cut 25,000 jobs by 2013 and exit operations in 20 countries as it looks to save billions of dollars. The announcement came as the bank reported pre-tax profits for the first six months of the year of $11.5bn (£7bn), up 3% on the $11.1bn the bank made a year earlier. HSBC said it did not expect any of the new job cuts to fall in the UK.

 

Somalia famine: African Union calls 'pledging summit'
The African Union has announced it is to hold a summit meeting to pledge help for the victims of Somalia's drought. The statement comes after considerable criticism in the African media of the failure of the continent's leaders to help famine victims across the Horn of Africa. The AU said the pledging conference would bring together heads of state and international donors.

 

Cyprus government resigns amid economic woes
Cypriot President Demetris Christofias on Thursday (28 July) dissolved his cabinet amid growing public anger over the handling of Iran-bound ammunition that exploded earlier this month and wiped out the country's main energy plant, triggering market fears that the island nation may be the next in line for a eurozone bailout.

 

EU to toughen sanctions after Syria bloodbath
The EU is likely to toughen sanctions against the Syrian regime after some 100 people were reportedly killed in the city of Hama when government tanks stormed in on Sunday (31 July), crushing protests in the five-month-long stand-off with President Bashar Assad. ...The EU sanctions and US similar US measures have so far had little impact, however.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says he doesn’t want to see a third intifada, and I believe him. So why does he persist in laying the groundwork for it? His two-pronged strategy of powersharing with Hamas and making a bid for UN recognition is foundering, increasing the risk that the high expectations he sparked among his people will dissolve into frustration and violence.

Lebanese president blames Israel for 'renewing aggression' on border
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman blamed Israel on Monday for "renewing its aggression" on the border with Lebanon after Israel Defense Forces troops traded fire with Lebanon's army in the Mount Dov region on the border between the two countries.
