Iran's Ahmadinejad: No place for Israel in region
The Iranian president said on Friday there will be no room for Israel in the region after the formation of a Palestinian state, and that once the state is established, the liberation of all Palestinian lands should follow. -"Recognition of a Palestinian state is the first step in the liberation of the entire Palestine," he added.  

Airlines begin canceling flights as Irene nears
Airlines began to cancel flights and move planes out of the way as Hurricane Irene barreled toward the U.S. mainland on Thursday. The storm will likely force hundreds of cancellations through this weekend and create delays that could ripple across the country.  

53 Dead in Attack on Casino in Northern Mexico
Two dozen gunmen burst into a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, doused it with gasoline and started a fire that trapped gamblers inside, killing 53 people and injuring a dozen more, authorities said.  

Rebels send in special forces to hunt for Gaddafi
Libyan rebels said they were sending in special forces units in their hunt for fugitive strongman Muammar Gaddafi, whose supporters are now pinned down in pockets of resistance in the capital, Tripoli. The rebel leadership announced it was planning to move from the eastern city of Benghazi, where the revolution to topple Gaddafi began six months ago, to govern the country from Tripoli.  

Japan PM Naoto Kan announces resignation
JAPAN Prime Minister Naoto Kan today announced his resignation as president of the Democratic Party of Japan, effectively ending his tenure as Japanese leader. "I resign as the (party) president effective today," Kan told senior party officials, Jiji press quoted him as saying.  

Egyptians to hold ‘million-man protest’ against peace accord with Israel
Who and how many will take part in today's million-man demonstration in Tahrir Square? It is not expected to be one of the routine demonstrations that have shaken Egypt since January. This time, Tahrir Square will confront Egypt's foreign policy. The headline of the demonstration is "Million-man demonstration to expel the Israeli ambassador," and most of the protest groups have announced that they will participate.  

Report: Israel to allow Egypt to deploy troops in Sinai
According to the report, Israel will allow helicopters and armored vehicles into Sinai, but will forbid the entrance of tanks. Haaretz reported earlier Friday that Barak said he would agree to send thousands more Egyptian soldiers into eastern Sinai in order to end the anarchy there, saying it would be "a clear Israeli interest" since it would stop smuggling of weapons and people from Gaza.  

More Cracks Found in Washington Monument
An inspection of the Washington Monument Wednesday found more cracks in the pyramidion, the top section of structure, according to the National Parks Service. At least three cracks are large enough to let daylight inside the monument. Debris also fell on the floors and in the stairwell.  

UK jets bomb Gaddafi hometown bunker
British Tornado jets fired precision-guided missiles against a large bunker in Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The Tornadoes took off from RAF Marham in Norfolk on a long-range strike mission on Thursday night. Libyan rebels are also building up their forces on the road to Sirte, sending tanks and rocket launchers.  

Hurricane Irene: Emergency declared in six US states
Six states along the east coast of the US, from North Carolina to New York, have declared emergencies ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irene. The first hurricane of the Atlantic season weakened slightly early on Friday to a category two storm, with winds of up to 110mph (175km/h). Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina.  

Islamic Jihad announces new Gaza cease-fire agreement
Islamic Jihad announced a new cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip early Friday morning, according to sources in Gaza quoted by Israel radio. The agreement was reportedly brokered by Egypt and the UN. The report added that the cease-fire was already in effect.  

Ahmadinejad: Palestinian statehood only 'first step'
The creation of a universally-recognized Palestinian state would be just a first step towards wiping out Israel, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Friday. He spoke weeks ahead of a UN General Assembly in New York where the Arab League plans to seek full UN membership for a Palestinian state.
