| CHRISTOPHER MORGAN: Grieving and Rejoicing that Osama bin Laden Is Dead Osama bin Laden is dead. How do we as Christians respond? As I watched the news reports, various passages came to mind–everything from Jesus’ teaching on loving and praying for enemies, to James’ forceful picture of a future slaughterhouse coming upon oppressors of God’s people. The more I reflect on it, the more I realize that my internal tension is similar to another one I have felt many times before–a tension related to the biblical doctrine of hell. As strange as it seems, hell is depicted in the Bible both as tragedy and victory. Hell is tragic, as it is awful that people rebel against God and persistently spurn the Savior. God is “slow to anger,” “abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exod. 34:6-7), and does not take pleasure in the punishment of the wicked, just as he does not find pleasure in the existence of sin (Ezek. 18:23). Jesus likewise grieved and wept over human lostness, sin, and impending... MORE | | |

MORE | AM THINKER: Does bin Laden's Death Really Change Anything? ...it's not certain that the death of Osama really changes all that much of the big picture. Osama has been in hiding, effectively marginalized, for ten years. President Obama was careful to mention, once again, in his speech announcing bin Laden's death, that "we are not at war with Islam." But much of Islam is at war with us, and with the rest of the non-Islamic world, whether... AP: Tornado Victims Seek Comfort In Sunday Services Macolee Muhammed accepted the prayer of a relief worker who stopped by what was left of her Birmingham home. It didn't matter that she was Muslim and he was a Southern Baptist. "If you came here to help, the only person who sent you was God," she said. The storms that roared across the South last week flattened churches and crushed the homes of pastors and parishioners in a ragged stretch from Mississippi to Virginia. At least 342 people were killed and thousands more hurt. Why did some survive without any explanation? Why did others die for no apparent reason? Many people in this highly religious region saw God at work, even amid the devastation. "God just put his big old arms around us," said Peggy Blevins... MORE | |

GET RELIGION: God At the Royal Wedding ...It was a surprisingly rich and deep Christian service. I’ll be curious to see how much of the media coverage focuses on the homily, which you can read in its entirety over at religion reporter Cathleen Falsani’s blog. Someone at the Dallas News picked up on some of the Christian themes in this blog posting. And the folks at the Telegraph are blogging up a storm (this must be like 40 Superbowls rolled into one for those who care), and a couple of posts caught my attention. Religion journalist Christine Odone wrote an enthusiastic post headlined “The royal wedding proves this is still a Christian country. Hallelujah!”...It goes on to discuss the hymns they chose and why they have meaning to society. It also quotes the line from the homily about St. Catherine of Siena, whose feast day is today. MORE |
