North Korea Holds 200,000 In Political Prison Death Camps - May 04, 2011
Satellite imagery has revealed new details of the extraordinary size of North Korea's secret gulags, which are now believed to contain more than 200,000 political prisoners. "For decades the authorities have refused to admit to the existence of mass political prison camps. These are places out of sight of the rest of the world whose inmates were treated essentially as slaves," Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific director Sam Zarifi said Monday. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has compared new satellite photos taken last month with images of a decade ago. This analysis showed a significant increase in the scale of the camps, said Amnesty. In one camp, Kwamliso 15, at Yodok, thousands of people are detained for guilt-by-association because their relatives have been arrested. The Australian

The National Day Of Prayer Is This Thursday - May 03, 2011
The National Day of Prayer will take place on Thursday, May 5th. The 2011 National Day of Prayer has special significance due to a recent court ruling by a panel of the US Court of Appeals, which affirmed the constitutionality of the law requiring the President to proclaim a National Day of Prayer each year. The US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, based in Chicago, ruled 3-0 that the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) and its plaintiffs do not have standing to continue their challenge of the 1952 congressional act declaring an annual National Day of Prayer. This year's theme is A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. National Day of Prayer

North Korea Cyber-Bombs South Korea - May 03, 2011
In an act described by a South Korean prosecutor as "unprecedented cyber terror", North Korea launched distributed denial-of-service attacks against a Southern banking co-operative. These attacks - known as "DDoS" - are a basic tool in the cyber warfare armoury. Millions of the bank's customers were locked out of their ATMs and credit cards for days on end. It's a very different kind of warfare - no deaths, no blood, but enormous inconvenience for a large number of people, and plenty of economic damage.Time

Former Russian Intelligence Officer Charged With Treason - May 03, 2011
After a group of Russian sleeper agents were arrested in the United States last summer, an angry Vladimir V. Putin, Russia's prime minister, promised to punish the person who betrayed them. Now, a former Russian intelligence officer suspected of blowing the agents' cover (to the benefit of America) has been officially charged, and could, if he is ever caught, face up to 20 years in prison in Russia. The officer, Aleksandr Poteyev, was charged in absentia with treason and desertion a spokesman from Russia's Federal Security Service said on Tuesday. Apparently, relations between the US and Russia are not quite as warm and transparent as we'd all like. The New York Times

US Takes On Bogus STD Cures - May 03, 2011
Federal health officials are cracking down on bogus pills and supplements that their makers claim will cure or prevent sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, herpes and genital warts. The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it has sent warning letters to a dozen companies selling non-prescription products with names like Medavir, Herpaflor and C-Cure. The agency said none of the products have been proven to treat any disease. AP
