Samaritan's Purse, already responding to the deadliest tornado in history in Joplin, Missouri, is looking for volunteers.
Luther Harrison, one of the disaster relief experts on the ground in Joplin, is with Samaritan's Purse. "We sent a relief unit up here...a disaster relief unit full of tools and equipment, chain saws - and we have volunteers who are here on site," he shares.
"The search and rescue phase is coming to an end," Harrison continues, "and we're letting volunteers go out in the outer peripheral area and to help folks now."
Those volunteers helping residents clean up properties, put a tarp on a roof, cut a tree, sift through rubble, and see if anything can be salvaged. The need for volunteers, both skilled and unskilled, will be ongoing.
"Basically, we're here to love on these people and show them the love of Jesus Christ as we go forward and minister to them alongside the local churches here in Joplin," concludes Harrison, who is director of North American projects for Samaritan's Purse.
Chaplains from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association have also been dispatched to deal with spiritual needs in the area stricken. Harrison points to the Samaritan's Purse website where people who want to volunteer can determine the needs in the disaster area. He asks others to continue in prayer.
