NewsForChristians: Monday Jan 10th

...It has been the want of faith, my brethren, that has been at the root of all the blight and barrenness of our past years. And if God is to make His promise in the text good to you and me for this New Year, and for all our own future years, it will be by strengthening and fertilising our faith!  When the root is weak or diseased, or when it has no deepness of earth, then any passing locust will soon kill the tree. But when the root is sound and strong and deep-seated and well-watered, the tree will blossom and bear fruit and will survive all the locusts that you can send up against it. Let us have faith, then, my brethren. Let us have, and in all things let us exercise, faith in God.Let us believe that He is, as we have never up to this year believed. Let us believe His Word. Let us read and meditate on His Word in a way we have never yet done. Our spiritual life and its fruitfulness comes and goes just as we read God's Word, and meditate on it in secret...  MORE

Dems, Media Blame Tea Party, Palin for Shooting; Shooter Linked to Leftwing Politics
As U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords fights for her life after a mad gunman shot her on Saturday, some Democrats and major media have moved to pin the blame for her attack on the tea party movement and conservatives like Sarah Palin, despite the fact that the shooter was both deranged and fascinated by leftwing politics. Giffords' Democratic colleague, Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, told Mother Jones magazine within hours after the rampage that the “political tone and tenor” created by Palin and the tea party movement had set the stage for the shooting. Grijalva said Palin's “apparatus” had put Giffords' and his own life at risk. “Both Gabby and I were targeted in the apparatus in that cycle [saying] these people are ‘enemies.’” He added: “The Palin express better look at their tone and their tenor.” The liberal New York Times was not far behind Grijalva, publishing a lead story headlined "Bloodshed Puts New Focus on Vitriol in Politics."    MORE

SHARPER IRON: Fomenting a Missional Revolution
A college president recently opened a can of worms in speaking of changing music on a “missional level.” I’m not sure what he meant by that, but “missional” is not going away. It is not easily toppled as some critics have imagined. I have read articles and heard sermons on “missional” which left me puzzled and convinced that many opponents have never been involved with a heterogeneous church or engaged in extensive cross-cultural ministry. Much time is spent in libraries doing research to find something to use against something disliked. This is especially true when one starts from the perspective that “missional” is bad and needs to be exposed...    MORE

MONDAY MORNING INSIGHT: Should a Church Give a Reason When Firing the Pastor?
A Wichita area pastor was fired last week from a fairly large (800 or so) church.  That's not the news.  The story here is that the church is not saying why.  In fact, they're not giving any reason at all. The local newspaper has picked up the story, and the church isn't commenting. The church, according to the newspaper report, really isn't telling the congregation much of anything either.  Pastor Bryson Butts...helped found GracePoint Church eight years ago. The news was delivered by Pastor Butts...on his Facebook page.  "Last night, the GracePoint board voted 4-0 to sever my relationship as lead pastor."  MORE

A makeshift memorial outside the hospital where the victims of Saturday's shooting is seen in Tucson, Arizona January 9, 2011. U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords battled for her life after a man shot her in the head and killed six people in a rampage that fueled debate about extreme political rhetoric in America.

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords remains in intensive care following surgery at the
University of Arizona Hospital for a gunshot wound to the head at close range.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, said surviving a gunshot wound to the head is rare, but not unheard of – and Giffords is in for a long fight.

Alvarez said the survival rate of a gunshot wound to the head is about 5 percent – and 3 percent of those who do survive will always have a neurological deficiency, such as memory loss or a lack or motor skills.

The last tweet from U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said, "My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later."

It sounded so innocuous. Minutes later, mayhem broke out and Giffords was critically wounded by a shot to the head. Six people were killed, including federal judge John Roll, who had recently worked with Giffords on court issues. A total of 13 people were injured.

Gates says China moving fast on new weapons
China has made strides in building a new stealth fighter jet and Washington is also concerned about a new ballistic missile that could theoretically explode a U.S. aircraft carrier nearly 2,000 miles out to sea. China has also apparently beaten U.S. estimates to develop that weapon.

Coptic Christians protest in Italy
Several hundred Coptic Christians and others gathered in Rome and Milan to demand religious freedom and protection following a New Year's church attack in Egypt that killed 21 worshippers. Some 500 people gathered in a downtown Rome piazza Sunday, some holding candles, some chanting. Many said they were demonstrating against religious violence not just in Egypt but across the world.

Strong 6.9 quake strikes off Vanuatu
A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck beneath the sea near the south Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, but no tsunami warning was issued, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said Sunday. There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which hit at 9:03pm (1003 GMT) at a depth of 31.1 kilometres (19.3 miles), 110 kilometres from the town of Isangel on Tanna island, the USGS said.

'Thousands rally over blasphemy law in Pakistan'
More than 20,000 people rallied in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi on Sunday, police said, against proposed amendment to blasphemy laws that were recently used to sentence a Christian woman to death. The protest follows Tuesday's assassination of the governor of Punjab province, Salman Taseer, by one of his bodyguards, after the politician sought to reform the law that gives the death penalty for defamation of the Prophet Mohammad.

Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans
President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today. It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

Obama, in blow to closing Guantanamo, signs law
President Barack Obama, in a setback to hopes for the quick closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison, reluctantly signed a bill on Friday barring suspects held there from being brought to the United States for trial. Making plain he would fight to repeal language in the law obstructing civilian U.S. trials for Guantanamo terrorism suspects, Obama said he was left with no choice but to sign the defense authorization act for fiscal 2011.

China Backs Europe, Euro for Investment, Central Bank Deputy Governor Says
Europe and the euro will remain among the most important areas of investment for China’s world-record $2.65 trillion of foreign-exchange reserves, a central bank official said in the nation’s latest show of support. “The euro and the European financial markets are an important part of the global financial system and were, are and will be one of the most important investment areas for China’s foreign-exchange reserves,” Deputy Governor Yi Gang said in a statement on the central bank’s website.

Banks lose key foreclosure ruling in top Massachusetts court
In a decision that may slow foreclosures nationwide, Massachusetts' highest court voided the seizure of two homes by Wells Fargo & Co and US Bancorp after the banks failed to show they held the mortgages at the time they foreclosed. Bank shares fell, weighing on broader stock indexes, on fears the decision could threaten lenders' ability to work through hundreds of thousands of pending foreclosures.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang making UK state visit
Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has arrived in Scotland at the start of a four-day visit to the UK to promote links between the countries. Mr Li is being greeted at Edinburgh Airport by Scottish Secretary Michael Moore.

Jo Yeates murder case: MP backs DNA testing
A MP has backed calls for the DNA screening of all men in Bristol as part of the hunt for the murderer of Jo Yeates. Miss Yeates' body was found at the roadside on Christmas Day eight days after she was reported missing. Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said if police thought the exercise was worthwhile she believed most men would understand why they were being asked.

Cameron says banks 'should pay smaller bonuses'
Prime Minister David Cameron has called on banks to pay smaller bonuses this year. Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr show he said banks should be more "socially responsible". The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), which is majority-owned by the taxpayer, should not be "leading the way" on bonuses but should be a "back marker", he said.

Mexico violence: Headless bodies found in Acapulco
The decapitated bodies of 15 young men have been found in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco. Police said they were discovered near a shopping centre and were all aged between 15 and 25. They were dumped there by drug cartel members fighting over the control of the drugs business in the city.

Arab World: Rewarding bad behavior
US President Barack Obama’s recent decision to appoint a new ambassador to Damascus is further proof positive of the effectiveness of the strategy pursued by Syria over the last half decade. It also showcases the sense that the current US administration appears to be navigating without a compass in its Middle East diplomacy. The appointment of experienced and highly regarded regional hand Robert Ford to the embassy in Damascus is not quite the final burial of the policy to “isolate” Syria.

Peretz: IDF needs to step up its attacks on Hamas
As violence escalated on the Gaza Strip border, Labor Party MK Amir Peretz said that the IDF deterrence strategy in the territory is beginning to weaken, reported Israel Radio on Sunday. No Strain

spacer (1K)

Be calm, no matter what may befall you. Rest in Me. Be patient, and let patience have her perfect work. Never think things overwhelming. How can you be overwhelmed when I am with you?

Do not feel the strain of life.  There is no strain for My children.  Do you not see I am a Master Instrument-maker?  Have I not fashioned each part? Do I not know just what it can bear without a strain? Would I, the maker of so delicate an instrument, ask of it anything that could destroy or strain?

No! The Strain is only when you are serving another master, the world, fame, the good opinion of men - or carrying two days' burden on the one day.

Remember that it must not be.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him. Psalm 37:7

blessings to you and yours this day and always ...

Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. Jude 1:24-25

Hallowed Is His Name

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 12:00 AM PST

Imagine that you have been granted an audience with the king. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for—the chance to bring your requests before his majesty. The great doors open, and you are standing before the throne. In awe and reverence, you first address the king. It would be improper to just begin asking for your needs.

Jesus instructed His disciples, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name’” (Matthew 6:9).

The dictionary defines hallow as “to make or set apart as holy.” God is holy. He is sovereign and omniscient. He is the King of kings, the Creator of the universe. When we place our faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, He becomes our heavenly Father. As such, we have the honor and the privilege of being able to come to Him in prayer.

It is important that we know the character of God, and honor and revere Him in our prayers, actions, and thoughts. God’s character is pure, holy, flawless, loving, compassionate, righteous, just, merciful, kind, long-suffering, honest, true, dependable, faithful, and understanding.

The more we know about God, the more we grow in fellowship with Him. This carries over into our prayers. Placing Him first and foremost in our minds keeps our focus on Him instead of on our needs and desires.

However, Jesus did not intend for our prayers to become ritualistic. Nor does He tell us how to pray. But by beginning with God’s name, we are reminded that we are coming before almighty God. As children of God, we have been given free access to the throne room of the King of kings. We can address the King as our Father. There is no greater honor!

O Lord God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O Lord, and your faithfulness surrounds you (Psalm 89:8).

Personal Life: Meditate Long and Often

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands, I spread out my hands to You; my soul longs for You like a thirsty land. --Psalm 143:5-6

Among Christians of all ages and of varying shades of doctrinal emphasis there has been fairly full agreement on one thing: They all believed that it was important that the Christian with serious spiritual aspirations should learn to meditate long and often on God.

Let a Christian insist upon rising above the poor average of current religious experience and he will soon come up against the need to know God Himself as the ultimate goal of all Christian doctrine. Let him seek to explore the sacred wonders of the Triune Godhead and he will discover that sustained and intelligently directed meditation on the Person of God is imperative. To know God well he must think on Him unceasingly. Nothing that man has discovered about himself or God has revealed any short cut to pure spirituality. It is still free, but tremendously costly. That Incredible Christian, 135.

"Slow me down, Lord, and quiet my heart this morning. Favor me with an acute awareness of Your presence as I meditate quietly for the next several minutes. I want to know You, God, so I can indeed move well beyond that 'poor average of current religious experience.' Amen."

Where will your commitments take you this decade?
by Rick Warren

So let's keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you'll see it yet! Now that we're on the right track, let's stay on it. Philippians 3:15-16 (MSG)

"Every choice you make has eternal consequences, so you had better choose wisely."

Nothing shapes your life more than the commitments you choose to make. Your commitments can develop you or they can destroy you, but either way, they will define you. Tell me what you are committed to, and I’ll tell you what you will be at the end of the next ten years. We become whatever we are committed to.

It is at this point of commitment that many of us miss God’s purpose for our lives. Some will be afraid to commit to anything and so they will just drift through the next decade. Others will make half-hearted commitments to competing values, and so they will face frustration and mediocrity over the next ten years. Others will make a full commitment to worldly goals, such as becoming wealthy or famous, and end up disappointed and bitter.

Every choice you make has eternal consequences, so you had better choose wisely. Peter warns, “Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives you should be living!” 2 Peter 3:11 (NLT)

Spiritual growth is not automatic. It takes an intentional commitment. You must want to grow, decide to grow, make an effort to grow, and persist in growing. Discipleship—the process of becoming like Christ—begins with a commitment to follow Jesus no matter where he leads.

Let Jesus shape your life this decade. Imagine what your life will be like at the end of this Decade of Destiny, if you make a full and complete commitment to him now.

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST FOR TOM & NITA HORN

Thomas HornFolks I just learned tonight that Tom & Nita Horn of Raiders News Network and author of Apollyon Rising, well their house burnt completely to the ground yesterday.

I was a guest on Tom's Show about a month ago and I had a wonderful time. They are great people.

I have been in contact with his daughter Donna and she just sent me the following from Tom.

"The bad news is our home burned to the ground with a lot of research material and personal momentos, not counting things like suits that us old preachers wear to make ourselves look thinner or more intelligent :-) The good news is we are okay, the Lord is great and powerful, and we are inundated with love from all our friends, family and neighbors. We trust God, and all will be okay, we are certain of it and are moving forward. We will be securing a home base for operations to use as we rebuild the farmhouse, and will continue clicking along and God will give increase to other matters." Please keep the Horn's in prayer.

Please keep the Horn's in your prayers.
