Libya has 50,000 active ready troops, over 2,000 Soviet tanks and 9.5 metric tons of mustard gas available at its disposal, and more according to the latest reports from Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

Soon after the Libyan rebellion escalated, a senior member of the nation's powerful Warfallah tribe announced it would no longer support Moammar Gadhafi, saying that "he is no longer a brother."

The Zawiya tribe, based in a petroleum-rich region in the east, threatened to cut off oil flow. The Bani Walid tribe decided to withdraw its men from the regime's security brigades. And the influential Zintan tribe, allied in the past to Gadhafi's own tribe, broadcast a statement of support for the opposition.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Tuesday that Iran is aggressively trying to take advantage of the domestic upheavals across the Arab world and warned that the United States needs to maintain robust aid and involvement in the region to keep Tehran from succeeding.

Clinton described Iran as working “every single day with as many assets as they can muster trying to take hold of this legitimate movement for democracy” in testimony before the US House Foreign Affairs Committee.
