Iran welcomes Russian proposal to restart nuclear talks
Iran's foreign minister hailed Moscow's proposal to resolve the Islamic republic's vexed nuclear issue ahead of talks with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday.  

Wis. GOP's Senate edge stays at 1 after recalls
After a summer of recall elections stemming from how Wisconsin lawmakers reacted to Gov. Scott Walker's proposal curbing public employee union rights, Republicans emerged bruised but not beaten while Democrats expressed optimism the tide was turning their way.  

Merkel and Sarkozy plan 'true economic government'
Under pressure to restore confidence in the eurozone, the leaders of France and Germany on Tuesday (16 August) outlined plans for further economic integration but shied away from financial measures seen by markets as necessary to stem the euro debt crisis. Following the two-hour talks in Paris, President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel said they would work towards a common corporation tax by 2013 and to co-ordinate their annual national budgets.

there was forceful talk of Eurozone countries being coerced into balancing their budgets and reducing their debt through what Merkel and Sarkozy called a ‘true European economic government movement’ made up of all the heads of state and led, initially, by the EU President Herman Van Rompuy. Frau Merkel called for a ‘stronger coordination of policy’ and ‘a new quality of cooperation’ within the Eurozone.  

FRANCE AND GERMANY IN ‘POWER GRAB’
The two governments came under fire after calling for a “collective economic government” for the eurozone over the debt crisis. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged much closer economic and fiscal policy. The two leaders said they wanted twice-yearly meetings of the 17 heads of eurozone governments, chaired by Herman van Rompuy, president of the European Council. They also backed a tax on financial transactions.

A Texas man was behind bars Monday after breaking into a stranger's apartment and biting her neck, claiming he was a 500-year-old vampire who "needed to feed," the Houston Chronicle reported.

Twenty years after the Soviet Union collapsed, Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, may not, as is sometimes alleged, be trying to recreate it. But he is pursuing a different project – to build a “quasi-European Union” out of former Soviet states.  

EU Agrees as Spain Reimposes Restrictions on Romanian Workers
A few months back it was acquiescence to France's sealing its border with Italy to prevent an influx of refugees primarily from Tunisia. When Denmark stepped up border policing, the EU chose to look the other way. Now the European Union has given Spain dispensation to restrict the number of Romanian workers looking for jobs in Spain.  

Russian Stealth Fighter Plane to Star in Moscow Air Show
Russia has one definite customer for the plane – India. India contributed 35% of the funding for the 6 billion-dollar development costs. To bring down the price Russia will need additional customers. The Americans are assisted by the fact that they will probably find customers in NATO as well as countries such as Israel that has already placed an order for the American planes.  

Mideast Quartet 'greatly concerned' by Israel's recent settlement plans
The so-called quartet, made up of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations, released a statement expressing deep concern regarding Israel's recent announcement to build 277 homes in the Ariel settlement in the West Bank, as well as more than 900 housing units in Har Homa in East Jerusalem.

Netanyahu to Clinton: Israel won't apologize to Turkey for Gaza flotilla raid
Speaking with Clinton via telephone on Tuesday, Netanayhu said that Israel does not intend to adopt an outline to restore its relationship with Turkey.
