No reprieve for quake-ravaged Japan
A MODERATE 5.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off the south coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu, US geologists have said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The tremor, which hit just before midnight, hit at a depth of around 22 kilometres, around 34 kilometres south of Shizuoka and 162 kilometres south of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey said.  


US may still lose AAA debt rating
THE House of Representatives' approval of a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling may not be enough to prevent the US losing its coveted AAA debt rating sometime in the next six months, largely because the agreement does not cut enough spending. The three main ratings agencies declined to comment on the prospect of future downgrades. But the agencies, along with economists and analysts, have signalled that doubts about America's debt will persist.  


Palestinians Announce Massive Protests Against Israel in Sept.
Palestinian officials say they plan to begin mass marches against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank on Sept. 20, the eve of a laregly symbolic U.N. vote expected to recognize their independence. Palestinian official Yasser Abed Rabbo says leaders hope to draw millions of people into the streets, and say the day will be the beginning of prolonged demonstrations.

 

High-level radiation detected again at Fukushima Daiichi plant+
Radiation doses of more than 10 sieverts, or 10,000 millisieverts, per hour have been detected outdoors again at the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, its operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday. If exposed to such a high-level dosage of radiation in a short period of time, almost all people exposed would die, radiation experts said.  


Israel working with U.S. to develop new peace framework
The framework reportedly will hone close to the call in May by President Obama for an agreement using the 1967 lines as a basis for negotiations, with mutual agreed land swaps. An unnamed Israeli government official was cited by international news agencies as saying Tuesday that there have been efforts over the last few weeks to formulate the new framework, which would be based on a speech made by Obama to AIPAC in May.  


Israel 'ready to negotiate borders with Palestinians'
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has bowed to US pressure by agreeing for the first time that a Palestinian state should roughly follow the contours of the 1967 ceasefire lines separating the West Bank from Israel. The offer, which emerged tonight appeared to represent a major climb-down by Mr Netanyahu, who has consistently refused to discuss specific borders of a future state.  

Putin says U.S. is "parasite" on global economy
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused the United States Monday of living beyond its means "like a parasite" on the global economy and said dollar dominance was a threat to the financial markets. "They are living beyond their means and shifting a part of the weight of their problems to the world economy," Putin told the pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi while touring its lakeside summer camp some five hours drive north of Moscow.  

Cyprus bank warns against 'bad' EU bailout
The Bank of Cyprus on Monday (1 August) warned that any further delay in appointing a government may lead to an EU bailout "with everything bad that entails." "With our inaction we are risking the ability of refinancing the state and the consequences will be instant and serious," a statement from the largest Cypriot commercial bank said after President Demetris Christofias failed to put together a new cabinet over the weekend.  

 

IMF Warns Of 'Bumpy And Uneven' Recovery
The IMF warned the economy was "subject to considerable uncertainties" and predicted it will grow by just 1.5% this year and 2.5% in 2012.  

US troops must have legal immunity to stay in Iraq
The top U.S. military officer said Tuesday that American troops must be given immunity from prosecution as part of any agreement to keep them in Iraq beyond the end of the year and that this protection must be approved by Iraq's parliament.

A new report by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense concludes that China already can defeat both Taiwan and the U.S. in a war over Taiwan, and that China’s superiority continues to increase each year.  

 

Markets slide on rising fears over global economy
Global equities sank and the dollar firmed against the euro on Tuesday as investors focused on weakness in the world economy and eurozone tensions, while awaiting progress over a US debt deal.  

Debt bill clears main hurdle
The United States is poised to step back from the brink of economic disaster as a bitterly fought deal to cut the budget deficit is expected to clear the Senate and President Barack Obama's desk.  

Report: Israel's new Mossad chief behind assassination of Iran nuclear scientist
Israel's Mossad is behind the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist last week, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported, quoting "a source in Israel's intelligence community."
