Japan suffers flood disaster
Much of Japan's northern area is now under water, following torrential rain from a weather system that has already killed dozens of people on the Korean peninsula. The disaster-ravaged Japan is likely to see more flooding in the next days, with forecasters warning of more heavy rain to come.  

Iraq to purchase 36 F-16 fighter jets from U.S.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday his government would buy 36 F-16 fighters from the United States, doubling the number it had initially planned to purchase to strengthen its weak air defenses. The announcement of the deal came as Iraq and the U.S.government discuss whether to keep some U.S. troops or military trainers in the OPEC country after the planned withdrawal of the last American soldiers at the end of the year.  

Finance Minister: Growing calls for reform could lead to 'anarchy' in Israel
Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz hit back on Sunday at the growing national protests over the rising cost of living, saying some reforms being demanded might lead to economic crises like those besetting parts of Europe and the United States.  

Earthquake jolts north-east Japan - no tsunami warning
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has been felt in north-east Japan, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, reports say. The quake's epicentre was off the east coast of Honshu. It struck in the same area as the 11 March earthquake and tsunami but no abnormalities at Japanese nuclear plants were reported, Reuters says.  

Iranian sentenced to blinding for acid attack pardoned
An Iranian man who was ordered to be blinded for carrying out an acid attack on a woman has been pardoned by his victim, state television has said. Ameneh Bahrami had demanded qisas, a rarely used retributive justice under Sharia law, but the report said she had foregone that right at the last minute.  

Bomb kills 11 at police HQ in southern Afghanistan
A suicide bomber blew himself up Sunday at the main gate of a provincial police headquarters in southern Afghanistan, killing at least 11 people in a city where Afghans have recently taken control of security.  

Activists: Syrian military kills 45 in Hama attack
Syrian activists say at least 45 people have been killed in military attacks on the flashpoint city of Hama. The Local Coordination Committees, which organizes and monitors anti-government protests in Syria, and the London-based Observatory for Human Rights in Syria say many others are wounded and the death toll is likely to rise.  

More than 150,000 take to streets across Israel in largest housing protest yet
More than 100,000 people took to the streets Saturday to protest the spiraling costs of living in Israel. Marches and rallies took place in eleven cities across the country, with the largest ones taking place in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Be'er Sheva and Haifa. The protesters chanted "the people demand social justice" and "we want justice, not charity."  

27 Rifles Stolen from California Military Base
More than two dozen assault rifles have been stolen from a Southern California military base, and investigators sought the public's help as they looked to arrest suspects and recover the weapons.  

Top Turkish generals resign, plunging NATO's second largest army into disarray
The head of the Turkish armed forces General Isik Kosaner along with the heads of the ground, naval and air forces have resigned, broadcaster CNN Turk reported on Friday, apparently plunging NATO's second biggest military into disarray.  

White House, GOP discuss potential debt limit pact
White House officials and congressional Republicans are reaching toward a potential end to their bitter debt limit showdown, raising hopes that a deal could be in place by Tuesday to avert a possible federal default. After weeks of strident partisan conflict, the two sides were discussing an accord that would raise the government's borrowing authority in two steps by about $2.4 trillion and cut federal spending by slightly more, according to knowledgeable officials.
