The European Union slapped sanctions on 13 top Syrian officials, including President Bashar al-Assad's brother, for "violence against demonstrators," it announced Tuesday. Syrian security forces were using soccer stadiums as makeshift prisons Monday in at least two cities -- Banias and Daraa -- after raiding homes and arresting hundreds of residents, the directors of two human rights organizations said. The killing of Osama bin Laden raises many haunting questions. Here's the most important: The families of two American hikers set to stand trial this week on charges of spying called on Tehran Monday to release the men. Six people were killed Saturday in northern Iraq when gunmen raided a money exchange office and stole more than $3 million, police told CNN. As the death of Osama bin Laden reverberates around the world, the root causes of extremism are apparently largely being ignored. Syrian State TV reports the military has began pulling out of Daraa. CNN's Rima Maktabi reports. A prominent Syrian opposition figure was arrested in a suburb of Damascus on Friday, according to witnesses and his wife, and protests sweeping across the country left at least 21 civilians and 10 security officers dead. Lawmakers discuss support for a bill that requires a definite timeline for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the wake of the daring U.S. special ops strike that killed Osama bin Laden on Sunday, many critics are calling on President Obama to declare victory and pull out of Afghanistan. As they note, we got bin Laden in a suburban neighborhood of Pakistan, far from the border areas where the Taliban fighters regroup. Calling the situation "untenable," a senior State Department official gave details Thursday of a proposed "humanitarian" solution to the standoff over Iraq's Camp Ashraf, a settlement of Iranian dissidents who say they will be killed if they are returned to Iran. At least 21 people died when a suicide car bomb attack ripped through a police headquarters, a strike one official thinks is retaliation for Osama bin Laden's killing. The Syrian military began pulling out of the southwestern town of Daraa on Thursday after a mission to "restore security and calm," state TV reported. Family members and friends of an Al Jazeera journalist detained last week in Syria were relieved when news of her whereabouts surfaced Wednesday, but they now have concerns as to when she will be released. Syrian security forces arrested two people outside of the University of Damascus Wednesday as student demonstrators rallied for the release of political detainees, eyewitnesses told CNN.
