Netanyahu: Israel will not be pushed to peace
Israel will not accept a Middle East peace agreement that is forced on it by external forces, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly said in private meetings in recent days, sources said Wednesday. Netanyahu reportedly told close aides that "it won't work and it won't be acceptable if a settlement is forced on us," stressing the need to ensure proper security arrangements as part of any future peace deal.  

'Sanctions delay damages credibility'
The credibility of the UN Security Council and the group of six world powers negotiating over Iran’s nuclear powers will be hurt if imposing new sanctions on Teheran gets drawn out further, a senior State Department official told The Jerusalem Post Tuesday.

A senior U.S. Federal Reserve official said on Wednesday that interest rates kept too low for too long encourage risky financial behavior and recommended raising borrowing costs to prevent another boom and bust. "I am confident that holding rates down at artificially low levels over extended periods encourages bubbles, because it encourages debt over equity and consumption over savings," Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Thomas Hoenig told a group of business people.  

China faces new health scare over 'bad vaccines'
Four years ago, Qiang Qiang was a healthy boy. Now, he is epileptic and has trouble keeping up at school -- problems that emerged after a vaccination against Japanese encephalitis. The seven-year-old is one of dozens of youngsters in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi whose parents believe their children may have suffered serious side effects from vaccines in the country's latest public health scare.  

Iran ridicules Obama's "cowboy" nuclear strategy
Iran's hard-line president on Wednesday ridiculed President Barack Obama's new nuclear strategy, which turns the U.S. focus away from the Cold War threats and instead aims to stop the spread of atomic weapons to rogue states or terrorists. ..."Mr. Obama, you are a newcomer (to politics). Wait until your sweat dries and get some experience. Be careful not to read just any paper put in front of you or repeat any statement recommended," Ahmadinejad said in the speech, aired live on state TV. Ahmadinejad said Obama "is under the pressure of capitalists and the Zionists" and vowed Iran would not be pushed around.  

Uruguay's new leader strengthens ties with Chavez
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered Wednesday to help Uruguay expand a refinery and supply it with crude oil. Chavez and visiting Uruguayan President Jose Mujica are expected to sign accords pledging to deepen trade and energy ties between the two South American nations.  

Al-Shabab militants raid UN base in Somalia
A hardline Islamist Somali militant group has taken over a United Nations compound in the south of the country. The fighters from the al-Shabab group, which is linked to al-Qaeda, disarmed UN staff at the base in Wajid near Baidoa, a BBC reporter says. The fighters seized food supplies from the World Food Programme, as well as other equipment such as computers and the local airstrip.  

Obama heads to Prague to sign arms deal
US President Barack Obama's vision of a world without nuclear arms moves closer to reality on Thursday when he and President Dmitry Medvedev sign a pivotal treaty aimed at sharply paring US and Russian arsenals while working to repair soured relations. Obama has not been able to deliver on all of the nuclear aspirations he outlined in Prague just a year ago — visions on disarmament that helped earn him the Nobel Peace Prize.
