Reaping What You've Sown

"Now the report of it was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, 'Joseph's brothers have come.' So it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well." -Genesis 45:16

Pharaoh and those who served him took great pleasure in seeing the joy and personal fulfillment that Joseph was experiencing. This is often the case for people like Joseph. Joseph had selflessly sought to bring blessing to whomever was in his sphere of influence. As Potiphar's steward he had increased this man's wealth beyond anything Potiphar had ever seen before.

In prison Joseph became a source of blessing to the warden of the prison, serving with such skill that the prison operations were completely put under Joseph's care. While in prison Joseph sought to be a blessing to the two servants of Pharaoh who had been imprisoned, seeking to answer questions that troubled them. Joseph then did the same for Pharaoh and the entire land of Egypt, bringing hope and security as he led the nation through the crisis of a famine. Lastly, Joseph showed his desire to be a blessing for his brothers, seeking to remove their guilt and shame for what they had done to Joseph.

When you live such a life of selfless servanthood, it's amazing how in the end others will find great pleasure in your own good fortune, as one who has brought happiness to so many others.

Genesis 45:16-28

16 Now the report of it was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, "Joseph's brothers have come." So it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Say to your brothers, 'Do this: Load your animals and depart; go to the land of Canaan. 18 Bring your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land. 19 Now you are commanded—do this: Take carts out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and your wives; bring your father and come. 20 Also do not be concerned about your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.'"

21 Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them carts, according to the command of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey. 22 He gave to all of them, to each man, changes of garments; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of garments. 23 And he sent to his father these things: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and food for his father for the journey. 24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, "See that you do not become troubled along the way."

25 Then they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying, "Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt." And Jacob's heart stood still, because he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. 28 Then Israel said, "It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die."

Pharaoh Sends For Israel (Verses 16-28)

v. 16 It Pleased Pharaoh – Joseph had brought great joy to Pharaoh in providing the leadership and wisdom to guide Egypt successfully through this crisis. He therefore found it an extreme pleasure to be able to share in giving to Joseph something that would make his heart glad.

v. 18 Fat of the Land – This refers to the produce the land had given during the seven years of productivity.

v. 20 Do Not Be Concerned – Pharaoh promises to provide all the household items and furnishings they will need and therefore there is no need to try to haul everything down to Egypt.

v. 23 Ten Donkeys – Joseph sends an abundance of good things to his father along with rich provisions for the entire household of Israel. Love takes great joy in giving to others that which will gladden and bring ease to them.

v. 24 Do Not Become Troubled – Joseph warns them not to allow division or trouble among themselves. Likely he feared that they might begin to bring accusations against each other for what had been done to Joseph and thereby create arguing, blaming and self-justification.

Jacob's Heart Stood Still – He was in shock. The last he had seen was his sons returning to Egypt, and left with the fear of losing them all in Egypt for being spies or thieves. But now, not only are they back with the beloved Benjamin, but also with the amazing news about Joseph who sent a caravan of gifts and food.

v. 28 My Son is Still Alive – The father's heart is overjoyed not with the fame and wealth of his son, but primarily because he is alive and they can therefore restore their relationship.
