LastCall: 'O LORD God of my master Abraham -Bob Caldwell

Prayer that Seeks Blessing for Others

"Then he said, 'O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.'" -Genesis 24:12

This prayer of Abraham's servant is a picture of a gracious man who serves a gracious God. Abraham, who is getting old, realizes he must begin to make plans for the future of his son whom God had given him through miraculous divine intervention and from whom a descendent would arise to become a blessing to the entire world. Being too old to take this journey back to Mesopotamia, Abraham sends his servant.

We see in this servant's simple prayer a selfless and gracious heart toward Abraham. He looks for nothing for himself. This servant shared in the selfless ministry of intercessory prayer. This type of selfless prayer is close to the heart of God, rooted in His own selfless agape love.

We also see that this servant had complete confidence in God's kindness and grace to answer his prayer. He asked God to give him a sign, one that would prove that God was leading him to the woman who was chosen by God for Abraham's son. What a privilege to know that when we bring the needs of others before such a gracious God, we can fully expect an answer.

Genesis 23:17-24:14

17 So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.

Genesis 24

A Bride for Isaac

1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, "Please, put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac."

5 And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?"

v. 17 Borders – Abraham had the boundaries of the cave and field set and identified, as well as the trees, which would have also been of value.

v. 19 Buried Sarah – Not only Sarah, but future generations of Abraham's family would be buried there, including Abraham himself, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah.

CHAPTER 24

v. 1 Was Old – By this time Abraham would be 140 years old; Isaac was 40 (Gen. 21:5; 25:20).

v. 2 Oldest Servant – This was most likely Eliezer who at one point in Abraham's life was considered his only heir, due to Sarah's barrenness. He would have been 60 years old by this time (Gen. 15:2).

Under My Thigh – This custom seemed to be connected with the significance of the hip as the part from which children issued; it was called the bodily oath.

v. 3 Daughters of the Canaanites – This referred to those who dwelt in the land where Abraham was living. They were an immoral and idolatrous people.

v. 4 To My Kindred – Abraham wanted a wife from his own heritage and one who had a respect for the call God had given him.

v. 5 Take Your Son – Abraham forbid his son to leave the Promised Land lest he become entangled in issues that would keep him away from the Land of Promise.

6 But Abraham said to him, "Beware that you do not take my son back there. 7 The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'To your descendants I give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there." 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, for all his master's goods were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 Then he said, "O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink'—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."

v. 7 Send His Angel – Abraham had faith and confidence that God, in His sovereignty, would orchestrate the whole matter, and therefore, the servant's hypothetical question was unnecessary.

v. 11 When Women Go – This servant put himself in a situation that provided a way for a potential wife to be exposed.

v. 12 Oh Lord – This servant was wise enough to pray to God for help and confirmation in meeting this need. He put himself in a position where God could work (at the well) but also put it all in and under God's care.

v. 14 Camel's Drink – For a woman to not only give water as requested for the servant but then to freely offer to draw water for the ten camels would be an unusual act of kindness. It is said that a thirsty camel can drink up to 40 gallons of water.
