Last Call: KNOWING THE WILL OF GOD -New Beginning

KNOWING THE WILL OF GOD

Genesis 24

Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the morning and get an e-mail or text message from God with

His will for us that day? There would be no need to wonder what direction to go, or what to do

with our lives.

Unfortunately, real life is not that easy. However, God has given us ways to seek out His will for our

lives. The story of Isaac and Rebekah is not only a beautiful story of God bringing two people

together, but it also provides five key principles about how to know the will of God for our lives.

PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES

1. You must look for it. Eliezer sought Abraham’s wisdom for choosing Isaac’s bride-to-be because

he knew God had spoken through Abraham. Today, we have the Word of God to look to for

guidance. The more we get into the Bible on a regular basis, the more we will see God’s grand

design, His purpose, and His plans for us. Scripture has everything we need to know about life

(2 Timothy 3:16).

2. You must ask for God’s specific will for you. Once you’ve gotten into God’s Word, it’s time to go

to the Lord in prayer and ask for His will to be revealed. One of the first things Eliezer did when

he went out was to pray for God to reveal His choice (Verse 12). There is nothing too

insignificant for you to pray about, and God wants to hear our requests.

3. You must wait for the will of God. The timing of God is just as important as the will of God. His

perfect will also comes with a perfect time for it to happen. Even as Rebekah met all of the

standards Eliezer had set forth, he still waited to see if she was who God had selected. It is easy

for us to pray for God’s will and then want to act quickly. But if God says for you to wait, it is

for your good. When the time is right, He will give you the green light.

4. You must act on it when it is revealed. When God told Philip to go to the desert, Philip didn’t

delay or ask questions. As a result, he was there at the right time to share the gospel. Likewise,

when God reveals a step to take, we need to trust Him and act on it. When you act on His

prompting and take that first step in faith, God will be faithful to reveal where the next step is.

5. God will confirm His will. In Verses 63-67, we see that Isaac was obedient to God’s will, waiting

in the field and praying. It was then that God confirmed His will through Eliezer’s return with

Rebekah. In the same way, God will reinforce His will by providing us with exactly what we

need. Isaac trusted and was rewarded with a God-blessed wife. When you trust His will for your

life, He will reward you by confirming it in a blessed way.

RELEVANT REMINDERS

The story of Isaac and Rebekah is picture of God’s compassion and concern for us, with us as the

bride and the Lord as the groom.

The bride was thought of, before she even knew it. God sent Eliezer to find Rebekah, even

when she had no idea that she would become Isaac’s wife. Likewise, God thought of you, and

chose you to be the bride of Christ, long before you were even born (Ephesians 1:4).

The message had to be proclaimed. Abraham didn’t wait for Rebekah to spontaneously show

up. He sent Eliezer to declare his message, that his son needed a bride. In the same way, God

has communicated the gospel message through His servants, the Church.

The facts had to be given. Eliezer’s job was to give the message, nothing more and nothing

less. Similarly, we don’t need to add anything to the gospel or take anything away from it.

Declare the truth and leave the rest to Him.

There was a down payment given. Rebekah received various gifts as a confirmation that

Eliezer’s offer was legitimate. God has given us the Holy Spirit as a sort of down payment

when we believe and trust in Him.

Rebekah had to make a break from any obstacles. When she decided to go with Eliezer, there

was no time to delay, so they left the next morning. In the same way, Satan will do anything

to slow you down and keep you from following Christ. We need to put aside anything that

would hinder us.

APPLICABLE ACTIONS

It is possible to know the will of God. But it is something that we need to seek out. It is something

we must wait for. And it is something we need to act on.

Are you seeking guidance in your life? Seek out His will and trust that He will direct your paths.

And if you do not have a relationship with Christ, why not begin one today? He is ready and

waiting to reveal His will for your life.
