LastCallDigest: Will your leadership have impact in future generations? (103-1) -Barry Werner

Will your leadership have impact in future generations? (103-1)

Leaders who selfishly pursue their own interests above those of God and others become unfaithful stewards whose influence debase rather than edify. A few select passages from 2 Kings that bring this point home are: 3:1-3; 8:16-27; 12:1-8; 13:1-6.

The second book of the kings of Israel and Judah describes the final days of the divided kingdom before both halves fall into captivity. As much as anything, this book is the story of failed leadership. Although there were some examples of earthly success, there were very few leaders that showed godly character, competence and compassion and the people they led reflected the deficiencies of the leaders.

The decline of the nation reflects the leader’s heart. When a good leader did come on the scene they failed to impart their value system into those that followed and through this one area of neglect the leaders that followed undid the reforms and positive direction of the good leader.

Second Kings tells the sad story of the decline and fall of Israel and Judah. It contains far more negative than positive examples of leaders for our instruction. Care will be taken to insure we focus on what can be learned from the negative and build on that as we look at leaders in 2 Kings. This book illustrates again and again that people never find what they’re looking for when they abandon God in favor of their own interests. That is a great place to begin understanding the leadership lessons of 2 Kings.

Would you like to have a positive impact beyond your personal time as leader of your team and family? Determine to apply our first lesson from 2 Kings – effective leaders teach and train with intentionality having in mind the second, third and fourth generations that will follow.

Numbers 14:18 “The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished; He punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”

Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.”
