Devotional Digest: The Christmas Miracle -Dimitri

The Christmas Miracle

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God" (Luke 1:35).

Dear Michael,
The wonder of Christmas is the virgin birth of Christ. Have you ever paused to ponder this great miracle? When the angel Gabriel announced Christ's birth to Mary, he said: Through this marvelous act of the Holy Spirit, the virgin Mary conceived and God's Son, Immanuel, entered our world. This is the Christmas miracle.

But there is more to it. When you turn to the Old Testament you will discover that this great miracle was actually foretold hundreds of years before Christ was born! In Isaiah 7:14, God revealed His marvellous plan to the world. "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son," Isaiah prophesied (Isaiah 7:14).

Many Christians don't realize the immense importance of this miracle. Do you know that without the virgin birth there could be no salvation for mankind? Think about it. For us sinners to be saved we need a sinless saviour. If Jesus had been conceived through the normal union of a man and a woman, He would have inherited man's fallen human nature. He would have been just like us! And being born in sin, His blood would not be sufficient to cleanse us of our sin. But this could not be! Christ's conception by the Holy Spirit was God's way of bringing His Son into the world uncontaminated by sin, and yet as a man. Though He came in the "likeness of men", Christ was without sin. "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin" (1John 3:5).

As you prepare yourself for the Christmas season, give much thought to the great miracle of the virgin birth. Jesus Christ is God in human form. Worship Him both as the Son of God and as the Perfect, Sinless Man. Furthermore, consider the end of your salvation – that day when Christ shall present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy (Jude 24). When thoughts like these occupy your mind, your heart will rejoice in Christ. After the angel announced the birth of Jesus to Mary she said: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47).

In His strong love,
Demitri
